“These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.”

-President Ronald Reagan

82 years later, the unwavering courage and unrelenting pursuit of freedom heroically displayed on D-Day continue to define who we are as Americans, as leaders and as Aggies.

On June 6, 1944, James Earl Rudder '32 successfully led his men up the cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc as part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

Rudder would later become the 16th President of Texas A&M University, laying the groundwork for its transformation from a small, all-male military school to the premier institution of higher education it is today.

As we continue to remember the life and legacy of General Darling, we encourage you to attend his memorial service at First Baptist College Station on June 13th at 11 AM.

Texas A&M mourns the recent passing of Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas G. Darling ’54, a decorated military hero and beloved former Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. His 33-year Air Force career included more than 7,000 flight hours and numerous prestigious honors. As Commandant, he left an indelible mark on the university, and his legacy lives on through the Sanders Corps of Cadets Visitor Center he championed, the Darling Corps Recruiting Company named in his honor, and the countless cadets whose lives he shaped during and beyond his tenure.

He dedicated his post-military life to ensuring cadets had every opportunity to succeed, establishing academic support programs, formalizing recruiting efforts and initiating the Corps Hall of Honor program. General Darling was a true Aggie in every sense of the word, and his legacy will continue to shape the Corps for generations to come. Here.
