Earth Week Plantings Completed at Green Lane Park

In celebration of “Earth Week,” the Montgomery County Conservation District worked in partnership with Montgomery County Parks, Trails and Historic Sites, Friends of Green Lane Park and thirty (30) community volunteers to plant one hundred (100) native trees and shrubs along Deep Creek Lake and Knight Lake on Saturday, April 21. Funding for this project was provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The goals of the project included enhancing and widening existing riparian (lakeside) buffer areas to slow and filter stormwater runoff, prevent soil erosion, protect water quality and enhance existing wildlife habitat. Species planted included Red Maple, Silver Maple, Arrowwood Viburnum, American Basswood, Pin Oak, and Red Oak. The project supports recommendations of the Green Lane Park Master Plan and several studies focused upon the Perkiomen Creek Watershed.

almost half the people in the U.S. use groundwater for their daily water? That’s why caring for it matters.

According to the US EPA, the average household leak can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. AND 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

Groundwater Awareness Week is also a great time to check your water well. A quick yearly test can help keep your water clean and safe. Want to learn more about testing your private well? https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dep/residents/my-water/private-wells/water-testing

The plan’s recommendations affect more than 400,000 residents across 50 municipalities in Montgomery, Berks, Lehigh and Bucks counties. The planning effort identified more than 130 flood sites across the 362-square-mile Perkiomen Creek watershed, with the top 20 designated as Phase 1 priorities. Joining me will be each of the Montgomery County, PA Commissioners (Jamila Winder, Neil Makhija and Tom DiBello), along with representatives from the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, municipal officials and partnering environmental groups.
