Last night at The Orpheum Theatre-Memphis High School Musical Theatre Awards, the Draco Playhouse production of Water for Elephants won four awards—the second most out of 48 schools.

Best Lead Actor: Hayden Hooper
Best Lead Actress: Maggie Dinstuhl
Best Supporting Actor: Jordan Farley
Best Featured Dancer: Addison Northcott

Hayden and Maggie will both move on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmys) in June in New York City on the stage of the Minskoff Theatre.

This marks the first time in the 18-year history of the local awards that both Best Actor and Best Actress come from the same school. The Orpheum Awards program includes schools from a four-state region. Congratulations, Collierville High School Draco Playhouse!

Join us in congratulating Mrs. Makenzie Perkins, Collierville Schools Counseling and Threat Assessment Supervisor, for being named a semi-finalist for the Tennessee Department of Education Supervisor of the Year Award!

Mrs. Perkins’ work is rooted in something simple but incredibly powerful: relationships. In Collierville Schools, we know students learn best when they feel safe—and they feel safest when they feel seen. Mrs. Perkins has made that belief a priority across our entire district.

From leading the implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts to expanding counseling and social work support, her focus has been on creating school environments where every student feels known and supported. That work has made a real difference—not just in our classrooms, but in the overall culture of our schools.

She’s also helped move our approach to student safety forward in meaningful ways. From launching ā€œCollierville Caresā€ to encourage students to speak up for one another, to building a proactive, districtwide threat assessment model, Mrs. Perkins has worked to ensure students are supported early and often. Her leadership has helped create systems that are not only responsive, but preventive—keeping students safer and strengthening confidence across our schools.

What stands out most is her heart for students. Whether it’s supporting those experiencing grief, advocating for mental health resources, or making sure every child feels like they belong, her work continues to have an impact far beyond the classroom.

Congratulations, Mrs. Perkins! We are grateful for the way you serve our students, staff, and community.

Congratulations to Mrs. Jenna Burke, STEM Teacher at SyCamore Elementary School, for advancing in the Tennessee Teacher of the Year selection process with the Tennessee Department of Education!

What makes Mrs. Burke so special is the way she approaches learning. In her classroom, it’s not just about getting the right answer—it’s about the process. She works every day to help students build the skills they’ll need for whatever their future holds: perseverance, adaptability, collaboration, and critical thinking.

One of the things her students know well is that it’s okay to mess up. In fact, it’s expected. Through what she calls ā€œFLOPS,ā€ students learn that mistakes aren’t failures—they’re part of learning. They try things, reflect, and try again. Over time, that builds confidence, resilience, and a willingness to take risks.

She also intentionally weaves in the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity), so students are constantly working together, solving problems, and thinking in new ways. Whether it’s a small team challenge or a bigger project, you can see those skills grow year after year.

Congratulations, Mrs. Burke! We are lucky to have you representing Collierville Schools, and we’re cheering you on every step of the way!
