Schroeppel/Brown House

Schroeppel/Brown House Jeremey & Bailey purchased the house on Dec. 20th, 2021. The architectural style of the house is Queen Anne. The turret is only one its unique features. R. F.

The house at 317 West Main Street is located on lot 7 and 1/2 of lot 8 block 10 of Charles Berkey's addition to Collinsville. Dr. Joseph Weber of SIUE called it a textbook example. It was designed by Collinsville architect John William Kennedy for Dr. Gustave H. Schroeppel. On September 11, 1905 Doctor Schroeppel purchased lot 7 block 10 from Louis Kreela for $2000. (Book 310 Page 297 in Deeds Boo

ks in the Madison County Court House) On April 29, 1908 he purchased W. 1/2 of lot 7 in block 10 from Henry and Margaret Volk and William and Lena Ackerman for $1200. (Book 336 Page 235)Volk and Ackerman had purchased all of lot 8 earlier in 1908 from V. and Caroline Quinzy. (Book 336 Page 117)

The house has been named on the Inventory of Architecture before WWII in Madison County prepared by the Illinois Historic Structure Survey - 1974 and the Historic Sites Inventory sponsored by the East-West Gateway Co-ordinating Council - 1980. In 1912 the house was featured in the Centennial Edition of the Edwardsville Intelligencer. The Collinsville Advertiser, dated December 22, 1917 states that Dr. Schroeppel had added two rooms to his office "to accommodate a new line of fixtures and apparatus for the accommodation of his patients." Dr. Gustave H. Schroeppel practiced medicine in Collinsville for 38 years. His brother, Martin, founded Schroeppel Undertaking which was located across Main Street from the doctor's home. Dr. Schroeppel married Minnie Becker whose uncle, John Becker, was the first mayor of Collinsville. They were the parents of Harold, Buelah, and Maxine. Their home was the center of much activity that included family and friends. Stories have been told about a pony being brought into the house. After Dr. Schroeppel died in 1933, Minnie Schroeppel sold the house to Dr. Wendell W. Brown on February 28, 1934. (Book 696 Page 329) Dr. Brown lived in the house with his wife Ruby and practiced medicine there for 49 years. In 1956 the house was remodeled. Dr. Brown added a 6' x 10' green house off the second floor. The home also has a small elevator. The flower basket has recently moved into the house. Co-owners are Steve Conners and Mike Ellis.

Hope to see everyone out at the festival this weekend!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 20th โ€“ which is going to be a VERY exciting afternoon in Collinsville!

As part of this year's Route 66 Centennial and America 250 celebrations, the City of Collinsville, Illinois (Official), Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau and the Collinsville Chamber of Commerce (IL) are teaming up to be a stop on the 2026 Hemmings Great Race!

Great Race participants will be arriving Uptown around 4pm on Saturday, June 20th. The City anticipates around 140 antique vehicles (from 1974 or prior) and up to 5,000 spectators for the Great Race alone โ€“ but there will also be a number of additional activities happening Uptown on the same afternoon, including:

๐Ÿ… The World's Largest Catsup Bottle Festival from 2-7pm at Herald Square, which includes a plethora of family-friendly activities AND a visit from the EPIC Big Idaho Potato Tour;

๐ŸŽ๏ธ Additional Octane Tour car shows in the parking lot across from City Hall and in the First National Bank of Waterloo parking lot as well as members of the Looking Glass Corvette Club lining one lane of Main Street from Hesperia through Seminary to create a grand entrance for the Great Race vehicles;

๐Ÿ›’ Shopping, food and drink specials at Uptown businesses that will be promoted before and on the day of the event (with so many visitors expected Uptown that day, we want your business to capitalize on this event!);

๐ŸŽถ Live music from Justin Rose โ€“ who weaves Americana soul, bluegrass energy, and indie spirit into a sound that feels fresh yet familiar โ€“ in front of City Hall;

๐Ÿš’ A small Touch-A-Truck area for families to check out vehicles from the Collinsville Illinois Fire Department, Collinsville Illinois Police Department and the City's Public Works Department;

๐Ÿ” Food trucks such as Takozz, Heaterz Food Trucks, Overboard8, Big Meechieโ€™s and Pig on a wing serving up delicious eats;

๐ŸŒฑ Horseradish products to purchase from JR Kelly Company: The Horseradish House (because what uniquely Collinsville event would be complete without that?!); and

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Extended hours at attractions like the Collinsville Historical Museum (where you can learn all about the history of Route 66 in Collinsville) and potentially the Collins House!

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ We're also encouraging Uptown businesses and businesses along the Great Race route (255 โžก๏ธ Horseshoe Lake Road โžก๏ธ 157 โžก๏ธ Main Street โžก๏ธ Uptown) to decorate their storefronts/lawns in an Americana or Route 66-related theme for the day of the event. Collinsville is in the running to be the Best Stop on the Great Race โ€“ and we're going up against cities such as Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Flagstaff and San Bernadino, so we need YOUR help! The bigger and more beautiful, the better!

A "GREAT" thank-you to everybody who has been working behind-the-scenes over the past year to make this a fantastic day for Collinsville!
