Illinois House Dems continue to fight for a responsible and affordable future. Our latest fiscally and socially responsible budget has earned Illinois its 11th credit rating upgrade since 2021, and brought us to an A1 rating—achieving our highest ratings in nearly 15 years.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority is helping expand access to affordable senior housing across the state through investments supported by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. These developments are designed to give older Illinoisans more opportunities to remain in the communities they know while providing long-term, affordable housing options.

Here in our region, North Bend Senior Residences in Fairview Heights is part of that effort, bringing 60 new affordable units for seniors 62 and older. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this project possible!

106 years ago today, after a decades-long suffrage movement, women across the country earned the right to vote. Today and every day, we recognize the dedication of the women who came before us and the ongoing fight for gender equality in the United States.

Libraries are essential resources that offer more than books. In the digital age, you can borrow eBooks and audiobooks from your local library through a mobile app. You can go to a library to use Wi-Fi, print a document, and at some libraries, use a shared sewing machine, Cricut, or other crafting supplies. Libraries are the heart and soul of our communities, and I am so happy the Illinois Heartland Library System can expand its reach and impact with these new grants.

IHLS serves central and southern Illinois, providing internal and external resources for ⅔ of the state. Libraries using IHLS services can borrow and exchange books among libraries, expanding the resources available in each community, and advocate for the best interests of libraries and librarians.

IHLS received three categories of grant funding: Technology, Library Services and Technology Act, and System Area and Per Capita. Technology grants allow libraries to expand their digital capabilities, offering a wider selection of books, magazines, TV shows, and movies through accessible providers. Library Services and Technology Act funding is specifically allocated for library events and community engagement. System Area and Per Capita funding allows IHLS to invest more resources in its related facilities based on population.

On August 22, 1791, in what is now the Republic of Haiti, an uprising began that would eventually lead to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Today, we remember all of the lives lost on the transatlantic trade route and in enslavement across the world. We must continue the work to abolish human exploitation and ensure every American and Illinoisan is free.
