A Hybrid CERT training course is finally here, and we are excited to share it with you!

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during CERT exercises, members can assist their community or workplace following an emergency event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

The course is FREE and you will receive a CERT manual in class and CERT kit upon course completion.

This free training includes an online lecture portion, a meet & greet, two (optional) hands on help classes, and an in-person, hands-on, practical portion.

Communications Officer of the Year 2021

In the Emergency Communications Center, we are heard, but rarely seen. We act behind the scenes, much like the heart, or the brain of a body, smoothly directing resources and information to where they need to go. We talk on the radio, answer the phones, enter paperwork, send pages, and all around spend hours on end banging on keyboards and talking into a headset.

Each year, the Center Supervisors, along with the Center Manager come together to choose a Communications Officer that has gone beyond the call of duty. They look through the year past and seek out qualities and achievements that define what it is to be a Communications Officer. This year, the Communications Officer that was chosen, was chosen because of her willingness, and lack of hesitance to take on the role of Acting Supervisor. This Communications Officer took on this responsibility while also working diligently with the VCIN Team to ensure that our Center would obtain a near-perfect score during the bi-annual audit. This is no easy feat.

Additionally, this Communications Officer has played an integral support role, often acting in the background of the background. They have worked as a trainer, a mentor, and with over twenty years of experience, they have provided a wealth of knowledge to tap into for every Communications Officer within the center.

It is for these reasons that Acting Communications Supervisor Denise Chandler, for the second time in her career, has been chosen to represent the Colonial Heights Emergency Communications Center as its Communications Officer of the Year. Thank you, Denise for all of your hard work and dedication to this center. You are an asset and a friend. Thank you.

We had an enjoyable and educational training this past Tuesday. We inventoried the Mass Casualty Trailer (MCI) and made a list of expired items that need replaced. Team members also learned what items were in the trailer and we are building medical ops training around the items and equipment in the trailer. Good things are happening!
