Charles L. Tutt Jr. was just 20 years old when his father passed away. Spencer Penrose became his legal guardian. Following his graduation from The Thatcher School, Charles Tutt Jr. briefly tried his hand in real-estate, served as a captain in the Army during WWI and worked for Mr. Penrose in many leadership roles. He would go on to serve as the President of Broadmoor Hotel in 1939 and head of El Pomar Foundation in 1956. His legacy continues with his sons, who became prolific and influential leaders in further shaping Colorado and maintaining the mission of El Pomar Foundation.

Charles L. Tutt, Sr., business partner and lifelong friend of Spencer Penrose, moved to Colorado Springs in 1885. By 1892 Tutt had purchased the Cash on Delivery (C.O.D.) gold mine and contacted Spencer Penrose to join him in the new business venture. Over the years, they would both become millionaires mining gold and copper and milling ore. Tutt passed away due to heart failure on Jan 21, 1909; he was just 45 years old. After their marriage, Grace Goodyear Depew Potter and Ashton Howard Potter plunged into Colorado Springs society, joining the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club, the Cooking Club and Julie and Spencer Penrose’s culinary clan. The Potters became close friends with the Penroses, and the two couples toured East Asia together. Eventually, Spencer and Julie Penrose would come to own the Potters’ El Pomar estate. Captain Ashton Howard Potter was the son of an industrialist, investment banker, philanthropist and diplomat. He first met Grace Goodyear Depew in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1907 while she was seeking treatment for tuberculosis. Three years later, they would marry at her El Pomar estate (now the Penrose House Conference Center) in Colorado Springs. He spent his time playing polo and poker at the nearby Cheyenne Mountain Country Club until his death in 1914. (Content by Tania Jordet)
