Today's the reason we use 911 for our national emergency number - The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911. It also lead to improvements in fire codes and safety standards.

March 25, 1911 – Triangle Shirt Factory Fire / New York, NY (kills 145)
On this day in 1911, 146 women and men died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York City. It is believed the fire began on the 8th floor in a scrap bin under a cutter’s table caused by the disposal of an un-extinguished match or cigarette butt in the scrap bin. The entire facility was filled with flammable fabric, and although smoking was banned in the factory, workers were known to sneak ci******es.

As flames spread to the 9th, and 10th floor, fire department ladders could only reach to the 7th floor. Many escaped to the roof where they were rescued. The owners locked the doors to the stairwells and exits to prevent theft. This meant many victims either jumped to their deaths or could not escape the inferno and died from the smoke, flames, or both.

This tragic event led to improved factory safety standards.
