Every frontline apparatus in our department is equipped with a computer, and it’s one of the most important tools we use on every call.

The moment we’re dispatched, the call information starts coming in live. As a 911 call taker gathers details from someone in the community, those updates are pushed directly to us in real time. That means we’re already building a picture of what’s happening before we even arrive.

With a quick toggle, we can switch to a mapping interface that gives us a full operational view. It provides recommended routes, nearby hydrants, building addresses, evacuation zones, and the location of all responding units. It also shows other active and pending calls across the city, giving us a broader understanding of what’s happening around us.

The company officer uses this system to maintain situational awareness and support decision making. It’s not just navigation, it’s information, coordination, and strategy all in one place.

These computers are a critical part of how we respond quickly, operate effectively, and stay informed!

Every fire apparatus carries detection meters, but our Hazardous Materials team utilizes more advanced and specialized meters to handle complex incidents.

These tools are used on a wide range of calls, including carbon monoxide alarms, gas leaks, structure fires, and hazardous materials incidents. They allow us to identify invisible hazards, guide decision-making, and operate safely in dangerous environments.

Behind the scenes, our HazMat technicians routinely calibrate and maintain these meters to ensure they are accurate and ready when we need them!

Every shift, the work doesn’t stop when the calls slow down.

On-duty firefighters take care of the station and the equipment that takes care of you. Bay floors get mopped, rigs are cleaned, tools are checked, and everything is put back in its place, ready for the next call.

We take pride in what we have, and we maintain it like lives depend on it…because they do.

Today, both apparatus serving the community out of Station 8, one of the busiest firehouses in our city, are reserve apparatus built in 1996. To put that in perspective, 1 out of 4 firefighters riding them today were born after those trucks were made.

It might get a laugh, but it should also raise concern. These reserve rigs are constantly filling in while frontline units are down for repairs.

Huge credit to the women and men at the LTC who work relentlessly to keep these reserve apparatus running and to get our frontline apparatus back in service as quickly as possible. We couldn’t do this job without them!

Today’s apartment fire shows exactly why a well-trained, properly equipped and staffed fire department matters. Our members arrived quickly, went to work immediately, and helped keep a dangerous situation from becoming worse. Proud of our firefighters and grateful no one was hurt.

Our community deserves a fire department with the equipment needed to respond safely and effectively. Reliable emergency apparatus is not a luxury. It is a basic public safety necessity.

Right now, a lot of our fleet is aging, breaking down, and operating well beyond its intended service life. Our mechanics and firefighters continue to maintain these vehicles well beyond their intended service life. Dedication cannot replace dependable equipment.

On your worst day, when seconds matter, do you want an old unreliable apparatus responding that might break down on the way, or a dependable rig carrying highly trained firefighters ready to serve?

Make public safety a true priority.

We take pride in our apparatus, and in taking care of them no matter their age.

Some of these newest rigs represent the best we have. But a lot of our frontline apparatus are being pushed well beyond their intended lifespan.

Costs have risen dramatically. Build times are longer than ever.
And critical frontline apparatus are becoming more and more unreliable.

This isn’t about our comfort…it’s about reliability when you need us most.

A long-term, sustainable funding solution and action from your elected officials are immediately necessary.

Hazmat 14 is back in service!

It’s the result of the relentless work done by the women and men in our Logistics and Transportation Center. They are behind the scenes every day, keeping an aging and increasingly strained fleet on the road and ready to respond.

This is not easy work. It takes time, expertise, and constant effort to keep these rigs operational well beyond their intended service life. And right now, they’re doing it constantly.

To our Logistics and Transportation personnel, thank you. Your work is seen, it’s appreciated, and it makes a difference every single day.

When serious car accidents happen and people are trapped, we rely on our TNT hydraulic extrication tools to remove doors, displace dashboards, and create space to safely free patients.

These are some of the most stressful and uncertain moments a person can experience. Being trapped in a vehicle is something no one expects, but it’s something we prepare for regularly.

No matter the circumstances, we will be there…trained, ready, and committed to doing everything we can to get you out and get you care.
