Mission: El Paso County Search and Rescue is a mountain search and rescue unit dedicated to saving lives through search, rescue, and mountain safety education. The team is composed totally of volunteers and is available upon request to help mountain search and rescue problems anywhere in Colorado under the authority of the local county sheriff or in other states and countries under local authority. The team is also available to provide information and lectures on mountain safety to interested individuals and groups. Our team prides itself on its many years of humanitarian service and its reputation for capability and safety. In addition to training extensively in mountaineering skills and search and rescue techniques, members work diligently to improve their emergency medical capability. Most members are certified to the First Responder level, many are Emergency Medical Technicians, and a few are working paramedics or physicians.

Winter Driving Preparedness

We have a couple more months of winter ahead of us. Is your car, truck, or minivan equipped to keep you alive if you get stuck, stranded, or caught by a surprise blizzard... or dare we mention another BOMB CYCLONE?!?!?!? Do you have enough for ALL of the occupants?

Check out the lists and tips in the attached link.

Don't forget medications you might need if you're stuck for 12 to 24 hours. As EPCSAR responds to a "mass motorist" event, it might be several hours before we can get to you. Think past these lists and what else you'd need to have with you.

The best thing is to stay off of the roads if you suspect a significant weather event. Stay home if you can.

SnoCat training today at the Akers Facility. It was unusually cold for this training, but added realistic conditions for a typical blizzard/SnoCat mission.

All members had a turn at driving a SnoCat, maneuvering a trailer through a course, and standing in the cold.

We also practiced loading a patient into the cab on a stretcher... need a lot of hands for that!

Training yesterday for the unfortunate "car over the side" accidents. These missions happen in winter when cars slide off of slick spots so... we train for them in winter.

(We hope we didn't disrupt local foot traffic too much. Thanks for being so understanding.)

Colorado Search and Rescue Association - CSAR

This holiday season we are showcasing some of our member teams. Colorado backcountry SAR teams are all-volunteer and provide a crucial, free service to Colorado communities.

El Paso County Search and Rescue was officially incorporated in 1970, after several preceding search-and-rescue-based organizations in the area evolved into the current nonprofit. In 1975, the team was accepted into the Mountain Rescue Association. Today, EPCSAR is a 70-member team responding on average to between 150 and 200 missions per year. EPCSAR includes several K9s and a couple horses, too! The team is 100% volunteer and there is never a charge for their services.

Santa might be finished, but El Paso County first responders are on duty. If you do the incline or hike today... bring your traction.

Amazon.com : traction for boots

PLEASE... in Winter and far into Spring... take your traction when hiking the Incline or Barr Trail. Last night we responded to a hiker that fell and had to be evacuated by litter. A second fell while we walked them out. We also saw a couple of trail runners fall hard. A litter evacuation is not fun and takes about a dozen of us to perform safely.

We don't recommend any one pair/maker over another... other than "any traction is better than no traction". It might only be needed in one or two switchbacks but soft tissue damage to knees, ankles, wrists, etc. will take a long time to heal. You could even break a bone, your neck, or compromise your cranial vault which can be life threatening!

You, your significant other, & your children need a pair. TRACTION is a cheap insurance policy and takes a moment to put on & take off. PLEASE!

From our brothers & sisters to the North... DCSAR is almost as awesome as EPCSAR. When we work together, we figuratively move mountains.

Heading out on the trail? Whether it’s winter or summer (and it is definitely winter!), please tell a responsible person where you are going and when you will return. Give them as many details about your trip as required – where you will park, what trails you will be using, where you will be camping, what kind of gear you have with you. Sign-in on trail registers where provided, check in with rangers if available, leave notes in your vehicle. And avoid hiking alone if you can – the consequences can be much higher if alone. Stay safe out there.

The 10 Essentials of Hiking - American Hiking Society

As you look for holiday gifts AND host visitors (Are we doing that this year?)... remember the 10 essentials. Give them as gifts or make sure your "out-of-towners" are covered.

Adapting to altitude is tricky but water, Water, WATER is a must. Let them rest, make sure they hydrate, and don't be afraid to turn around if it's not going well.

Another gift idea for the hiking friend or relative??? Traction! Ice is all over and having traction makes a world of difference. Everyone on our Team carries traction to keep ourselves from being a subject.

Happy Holidays from El Paso Count Search & Rescue!

We are happy to announce that Rescue 83 and his K9 “Bailey” have passed the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) Human Remains Detection-Land Certification test.

Bailey is a 2 year old female Yellow Labrador with one speed-full blast. Though not one of the more fun missions we do, EPCSAR supports law enforcement several times a year on remains searches. The addition of Bailey to this small team of EPCSAR certified K9s will help us better do our mission and bring closure to families.

R83 and Bailey have, in this past year, supported six lost-person searches both in and out of County--the HRD certificate adds another opportunity for Bailey to do her favorite job--sear

They are do what they do for all of us. Emergencies don't take a day off.

A temporary alternate route from the end of Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak has been extended through Dec. 31, 2020. If the construction activity impacting that area is completed before that date, the detour will be removed early. The extension is due to delays in receiving construction material for the new Summit Visitor Center due to COVID-19 and weather challenges. The Visitor Center is still expected to open in the spring of 2021.

Thanks to Cindy and Chuck Bowles, both members of The AdAmAn Club for being in the right place at the right time today, hearing a call for help on Helen Hunt Falls trail where a fellow took a nasty fall on the ice and ended up with an injury that he likely would not have survived overnight

Thank you all for your efforts trying to find Kevin. We are so grateful.
My friend is overseas serving our country and her beloved dog has vanished from her home in Fort Bliss. The least we can do to thank her for her service is rally together and find her best friend. Maya is spayed, Chipped and very much loved. Her owner is offering a 5K reward, and my organization Pit Bull Defense Fund is also contributing additional funds for her safe return. Please share Mayah!! Please, help spread the word so we can get her home before she ends up in the wrong hands. She's a very sweet dog. More information on my FB page, Pit Bull Defense Fund. Thank you!
I have two puppies that I've been training since 3 days old. They are now 8 weeks old and I think they would be awesome for AVY or SAR. We have been doing mazes and playing hide and seek with them, as well as extensive other training. Unfortunately, we can't keep them, but we'd love for them to be a part of your awesome cause! To any handlers, if you are interested in visiting and testing them, please contact me!
Many thanks to El Paso County Search and Rescue for all that they do. Thanks also for taking time from their busy calendar to support the Wildlander. Come run with them when they compete for the Jay Shaffer Memorial cup at Sandstone Ranch in Larkspur. The event includes a 5k walk/run and a 12k run as well as family activities. The Wildlander benefits Larkspur Fire Protection District and the Wildland Firefighter Foundation! For details see: https://wildlander.org.
