After a recent acknowledgement by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, Colton PD Command Staff recognized two professional staff members for their attention to detail and consistency in their work, while one of our officers was recognized for his knowledge and professionalism.

These moments are a great reminder that excellence isn’t always found in the spotlight—it’s in the everyday work that helps strengthen our department and supports the agencies we work alongside.

*** DUI / CDL CHECKPOINT FRIDAY, 08/14/26 ***

On Friday, August 14, 2026, the Colton Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) & Driver’s License (CDL) Checkpoint from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk.” Chief A. Vega said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Colton Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some
prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and
recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

*** ATTEMPTED MURDER INVESTIGATION ***

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, at approximately 8:57 a.m., officers from the Colton Police Department responded to the 1400 block of Bordwell Avenue in the City of Colton following reports of gunfire and a female screaming. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and an adult male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. Officers immediately began litesaving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. The suspect and victim were transported to local trauma centers. The victim remains in critical but stable condition, while the male suspect, identified as Kenneth McCovery, sustained life-threatening injuries.

Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Based on the preliminary investigation, this appears to be an isolated incident involving individuals in a personal relationship. This investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information related to this case is encouraged to contact Detective I.
