We’re a proud partner of the Allina Health Mental Health and Addiction Care Center in Fridley. SACA operates a remote food pantry for patients of the center, and we are excited to grow the program with a new garden project!

The Substance Use team started a garden in partnership with the Anoka County SHIP program. Practitioners and patients spend time working in the garden as a part of their therapy program and the produce grown comes to SACA. Next year, the garden will help stock the onsite pantry, so patients can take home fresh produce in addition to pantry items and a freezer meal.

Food is medicine - and amazing things happen when we all work together. 🤝

At SACA, we are constantly working to best meet the needs of our neighbors. This morning, we had our first Morning Market and it was a big success! We're already thinking of ideas to make it better and are getting ready to scale up and serve more neighbors.

In the past few months, we've noticed that Wednesday is our slowest market day. It's also the day where we get the least amount of food rescue.

With these two things in mind, we've decided to close our Wednesday programming (Community Market and SACA Thrift Store) and open more Morning Market appointments on Fridays. This model will give our staff an important administrative day mid-week and ultimately allow us to serve more neighbors.

Morning Market appointments offer hygiene, pet food, and household items (as we have them available), in addition to the fresh, frozen, and dry goods that you can always find in the market. Neighbors can book Morning Market appointments once a month on our website at sacafoodshelf.org/morningmarket.

To recap: SACA Community Market and Thrift store is closed on Wednesdays starting next week (8/26), and Morning Market appointments for 8/28 are open for booking now. 😊

On Monday, we hit a new record for families served in one day (which happens almost every week!). 225 families came through our doors in the 4 hours that we were open. Our Community Market model provides fresh, nutritious foods to families who need it— as often as they’d like and without barriers. Our record breaking numbers mean that this model is working — more and more families are receiving healthy food — and that is something to celebrate! 🎉
