Deputy Chief Erik Johnston was one of the founding members and a driving force behind the formation of our Columbia Heights Police Association. We wish him all the best in his new endeavor as Chief of the White Bear Lake Police Department.

After more than 23 years of dedicated service with the CHPD, it’s an honor to congratulate Deputy Chief Erik Johnston on his new role as chief of police for the City of White Bear Lake.

“Erik will be greatly missed, but this opportunity is a well-deserved recognition of his years of dedication and leadership,” said Police Chief Matt Markham. “The White Bear Lake community is gaining a proven leader whose experience will serve them well.”

The Columbia Heights Police Association is selling K9 Kansas plushes for $25 (cash or Venmo). The proceeds go towards the Columbia Heights Police Association to help fund Shop with a Cop, the bike giveaway, Iftar with a Cop, and other events that give back to the community. These can be purchased at the front office at the Columbia Heights Police Department between 8am-430pm. Thanks for the support! 😊🐾

The members of the Columbia Heights Police Association (CHPA) were able to enjoy the holiday season by taking 19 local families shopping with our Shop with a Cop program. The program is funded by our membership dues and donations from our community members and businesses.

With these funds we are also able to gift $800 towards a meal we will share at the Columbia Heights Masjid this coming Spring during the Ramadan celebration.

CHPA wants to extend a thank you to all who donated and to our members who shopped with the families.

Rest in Heaven, Mike. Thank you for your service and sacrifice to the members of our agency and our community.

The Columbia Heights Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Officer Mike McGee, who passed away on May 22, 2025.

Officer McGee served the Columbia Heights community for 30 years (1977-2007) in various roles, including investigations, school resource officer, and street patrol.

A respected member of Columbia Heights for decades, McGee was known for his generosity and warmth. He and his family often welcomed on-duty officers into their home during the holidays, ensuring they could enjoy a home-cooked meal. His impact on the Columbia Heights community will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed.

Visitation: Monday, June 16, 4-8 pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Cemetery (2250 St. Anthony Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55418)

Funeral Service: Tuesday, June 17, at 1 pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Cemetery, with one-hour visitation prior at noon. Interment to follow.

Tonight we are celebrating Ramadan with our Muslim community at the Columbia Heights Masjid. Each year we set aside money from our Shop with a Cop program to sponsor an Iftar dinner. Ramadan Mubarek!

The members of the Columbia Heights Police Association had a wonderful time spreading peace and joy this holiday season once again during our Shop with a Cop program! Thanks to the donations from our membership and community partners, we were able to assist 17 families in purchasing gifts and food items at Target for their families in need. We were also able to donate $700 to our embedded Social Workers from Canvas Health to purchase much-needed cold weather gear for people in need. We are also donating $300 in jackets and cold weather gear to the Columbia Heights Public School District (ISD13) for students in need. Lastly, we will be donating $600 to the Columbia Heights Masjid (Mosque) as we partner with them in the spring for an Iftar meal during Ramadan. Thank you so much to everyone who donated! You can donate to this program throughout the year, and any funds received after this year's closing will be encumbered for next year's program.
