🇺🇸 D-DAY – 82 YEARS LATER 🇺🇸

June 6, 1944 – June 6, 2026

Eighty-two years ago, thousands of young Americans climbed into landing craft, boarded transport aircraft, and set out across the English Channel toward an uncertain fate.

Many were barely old enough to vote.

Some had never left their hometown.

None knew what the day would bring.

At dawn on June 6, 1944, American forces stormed the beaches of Normandy while paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped behind enemy lines in the darkness.

They faced machine guns.

They faced artillery.

They faced impossible odds.

Yet they kept moving forward.

Not for medals.

Not for recognition.

But for each other.

And for the belief that freedom was worth defending.

The courage displayed on the beaches of Utah and Omaha and in the fields and villages of Normandy helped change the course of World War II and ultimately the course of history itself.

Today, 82 years later, we remember the men who landed on those beaches, jumped from those aircraft, and fought their way across Europe.

Many never returned home.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today.

Their legacy lives on in every generation of Americans who have answered the call to serve.

Today we honor the Greatest Generation.

Today we remember D-Day.

We will never forget.

🇺🇸 AAR FRIDAY 🇺🇸

AFTER ACTION REVIEW

Another week is in the books at the Maury County Veterans Service Office.

This week we helped veterans and their families navigate benefits, file claims, gather evidence, answer questions, and take the next steps toward receiving the benefits they earned through their service.

Now it’s time for a friendly reminder.

📋 Do your homework.

If we asked you to gather medical records…

If we asked you to complete forms…

If we asked you to obtain documents…

If we asked you to respond to a VA letter…

Please don’t put it off.

One of the most important things veterans need to understand is this:

It’s YOUR claim.

We’re here to help.

We’re here to guide you.

We’re here to fight for you.

But there are some things only you can do.

The faster we receive the information we need, the faster we can continue moving your claim forward.

Think of it as a team effort:

🤝 You provide the information.

🤝 We provide the expertise.

🤝 Together, we build the strongest claim possible.

Once you’ve done your part, the rest is in our hands, and we’ll continue advocating for you every step of the way.

Thank you for trusting us to assist you.

Have a safe weekend, and if you’ve got homework from your VSO…

Don’t forget to complete the mission.

🇺🇸 PTSD AWARENESS MONTH 🇺🇸

June is PTSD Awareness Month

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects millions of Americans, including many of our nation’s veterans.

For some, PTSD is the result of combat.

For others, it may stem from military training accidents, sexual trauma, first responder experiences, serious injury, or other traumatic events.

The reality is that PTSD doesn’t always look the way people think it does.

Sometimes it’s nightmares.

Sometimes it’s anxiety.

Sometimes it’s anger, isolation, hypervigilance, or difficulty trusting others.

Sometimes there are no visible signs at all.

Many veterans battle PTSD quietly while continuing to work, raise families, and serve their communities. The struggles may be invisible, but they are very real.

The good news is this:

PTSD is treatable.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness.

It is a sign of strength.

If you’re struggling, know that you are not alone. Help is available, and there are people who care.

If you’re a family member or friend of a veteran, remember that your support can make a tremendous difference.

This month, let’s help break the stigma surrounding mental health and remind our veterans that asking for help is one of the bravest things a person can do.

💚 Check on your battle buddies.

💚 Reach out to someone you haven’t heard from in a while.

💚 Let veterans know they matter.

Because they do.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.

🇺🇸 THANK YOU, WEATHER DOWN IN MULE TOWN! 🇺🇸

When we shared the needs of the James T. Patterson Memorial Pantry, we hoped the community would respond.

Thanks to Weather Down in Mule Town, the response has been incredible.

Since they shared our post, donations have been arriving steadily—sometimes it feels like every hour another person is walking through the door with food, hygiene items, or pantry supplies for local veterans in need.

This is what makes Maury County special.

When a need arises, our community steps up.

Veterans helping veterans.

Neighbors helping neighbors.

People coming together to support those who once answered the call to serve.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to the entire team at Weather Down in Mule Town for using their platform to support our veterans. Their page reaches thousands of people throughout our community, and their willingness to help has already made a real difference.

While many know them for keeping Maury County informed and storm-prepared, they continue to demonstrate what community service is all about.

🇺🇸 THIS DAY IN MILITARY HISTORY 🇺🇸

June 4, 1942

The Battle of Midway Begins

Just six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States faced what many historians consider the most important naval battle in American history.

On June 4, 1942, American and Japanese forces clashed near a tiny speck of land in the Pacific known as Midway Atoll. What followed would change the course of World War II.

The Japanese Imperial Navy entered the battle with the goal of destroying America’s remaining carrier fleet and securing dominance in the Pacific. Instead, American codebreakers, pilots, sailors, and Marines delivered a devastating blow to Japan’s naval power.

During the battle, U.S. forces sank four Japanese aircraft carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū—the same carriers that had participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor just months earlier.

The victory at Midway marked a turning point in the Pacific War. For the first time, Japan’s expansion had been decisively stopped, and the initiative began shifting to the United States. Historians have called Midway one of the most decisive naval victories in history.

But behind every victory were young Americans who climbed into aircraft knowing they might never return.

Many did not.

Today we remember the sailors, aviators, and Marines whose courage and sacrifice helped secure victory in the Pacific and ultimately helped win World War II.

The Battle of Midway wasn’t just a victory. It was a turning point.

🇺🇸 VA CLAIMS 101 🇺🇸

“Why is my claim taking so long?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at the Maury County Veterans Service Office.

The truth is, every claim is different. While some claims move quickly, others require additional development before the VA can make a decision.

Some common reasons a claim may take longer include:

📋 Missing evidence or records

🏥 Waiting on medical examinations (C&P Exams)

📑 Requests for military service records

👨‍⚕️ Requests for private medical records

🔍 VA review of complex medical conditions

⚖️ Multiple claimed conditions requiring separate evaluations

Sometimes the VA is waiting on information from doctors, hospitals, government agencies, or even the veteran themselves.

One of the biggest ways veterans can help keep their claim moving is by responding quickly to requests for information and attending all scheduled examinations.

Remember:

✅ No news does not always mean bad news.

✅ Development is often a sign that the VA is actively working your claim.

✅ A fully developed claim is often a stronger claim.

Our office monitors claims, assists with evidence gathering, answers questions, and helps veterans navigate the process from start to finish.

The goal isn’t just a fast decision.

The goal is the right decision.

🇺🇸 PACT ACT TUESDAY 🇺🇸

Were you denied before? You may qualify now.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from veterans is:

“I already filed years ago and got denied.”

The PACT Act changed the game for many veterans exposed to toxic substances during military service.

Because of expanded presumptive conditions and toxic exposure recognition, veterans who were previously denied may now be eligible for benefits and healthcare they did not qualify for before.

This may include veterans exposed to:

☣️ Burn Pits
☣️ Agent Orange
☣️ Gulf War Toxins
☣️ Airborne Hazards
☣️ Radiation Exposure
☣️ Other Toxic Substances

A previous denial does not automatically mean you are still ineligible.

If you served and believe your health condition may be connected to toxic exposure, let us review your situation.

You earned these benefits. Let us help you determine whether the PACT Act has changed your eligibility.

🇺🇸 MORE THAN JUST CLAIMS 🇺🇸

When people hear “Veterans Service Office,” they often think our job is simply filing VA disability claims.

Claims are certainly an important part of what we do, but being a Veterans Service Officer is about so much more than paperwork.

On any given day, we may help a veteran:

✅ File a disability compensation claim

✅ Enroll in VA Health Care

✅ Apply for survivor benefits

✅ Connect with mental health resources

✅ Understand education benefits

✅ Access housing assistance

✅ Obtain military records

✅ Navigate the VA system

✅ Connect with local veteran organizations

✅ Find emergency assistance

✅ Learn about the benefits they’ve earned through service

Sometimes we’re helping a veteran win benefits they’ve fought years to receive.

Sometimes we’re helping a widow understand survivor benefits after losing a loved one.

Sometimes we’re simply listening.

Many veterans walk through our doors carrying burdens that have nothing to do with a claim. Sometimes they need guidance. Sometimes they need resources. Sometimes they just need someone who understands.

At the Maury County Veterans Service Office, our mission is simple:

Serve veterans and their families.

Whether you need help filing a claim, understanding your benefits, or finding the right resources, we’re here to help.
