We would like to thank Family Connection of South Carolina for presenting our Deputy Director Jennifer Rainville with the Advocate of the Year award over the weekend! 🙌

The award was part of a special ceremony celebrating the opening of Family Connection’s 2026 LOOK! exhibit. The collection offers a glimpse into the unique abilities of children and youth with a disability or chronic health condition. You can find the exhibit at Richland Library Main (1431 Assembly St) in Columbia, SC from June 11th - July 17th.

Congratulations, Jennifer! 🎉

Sue Berkowitz shares SC Appleseed’s response to today’s Senate vote which rejected redistricting.

From our Executive Director Bridget Brown:

“Today I’m proud to be a South Carolinian. The public came out in droves to the ballot box to say that the right to vote matters. And their voices were heard loud and clear.”

We would like to thank all of the amazing partners who helped play a major role in the advocacy work across the past several weeks, including Veterans for All Voters, League of Women Voters, Phil Ford of Ford & Ford Group, ACLU, WREN, the Ubuntu Collective and the SC Conference of the NAACP.

THANK YOU to everyone who attended yesterday’s public hearing for the Dominion Rate Hike. The room was completely packed in both sessions thanks to you. The Public Service Commission (PSC) heard from individuals from all across the Midlands about the impact that the rate hike would have on their daily lives.

We know this process is not perfect. A settlement was proposed prior to the Columbia public hearings, but has not been finalized by the PSC. We are thankful to everyone who took time during their testimony to emphasize the importance of the public hearing process. We are committed to working alongside community members to ensure that all voices are appropriately heard and considered before any agreements are made.

We will provide an update in the coming days about the final details and resolution of this rate hike proposal.

My own special Justice Pet, Wellie, and I want to say thank you to everyone who has already given, and to everyone who has been part of SC Appleseed's community throughout this year. Days like today remind me just how much this work is supported by people who genuinely care—just like you.

Midlands Gives is a great opportunity to support the meaningful work of local nonprofits you care about - which is why I give every year too. I'd love for you to join us today.

Your support fuels everything we do: defending Medicaid and SNAP for families who depend on them, protecting public education at the State House, advancing fair housing across South Carolina. This is just some of the work your gift makes possible—we can't do it without you.

Thank you for being part of it.

With Gratitude,

Bridget Brown
