Have you ever wondered why old Southern porches have a certain color of blue ceilings? It is called “haint blue”. The belief was that spirits would not cross water, so a ceiling painted like sky or water sent them on their way. Wasps were supposed to fall for it too.

Origin: Rooted in Gullah Geechee culture, where the color was believed to trick or ward off restless spirits known as “haints”.

Ours is still up there.
Come sit under it sometime. The story is better from the swing.
