The apron has long been an important part of Freemasonry. Its origins can be traced to the practical aprons worn by operative stonemasons for protection while working. Within Freemasonry, the apron took on a ceremonial and symbolic role.

Throughout September, we'll be highlighting ceremonial items from our collection. Pictured is William Clark's Masonic apron, on loan from St. Charles Lodge No. 241. This painted silk apron dates to the early years of Freemasonry in Missouri and connects one of Missouri's best-known historical figures to the state's Masonic history. Visitors to the Missouri Masonic Museum can discover other decorative aprons spanning Missouri's history, including those belonging to Marshall Welch, William F. Kuhn, and Garrett C. Stewart.

The museum is free and open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Come see these artifacts of Missouri Masonic history in person! Visit museum.mohome.org to learn more!
