🚨 FRAUD ALERT: ā€œYour Flight Is Canceledā€ Text Scam 🚨

Heading out of town for Thanksgiving? Scammers know it, and they may send fake flight cancellation texts to trick travelers into giving up personal or financial information.

How the scam works:
āœˆļø You get a text or email saying your flight is canceled, delayed, or needs ā€œreconfirmation.ā€
šŸ”— The message includes a link to ā€œfixā€ the problem.
šŸ’³ That link goes to a fake airline page asking you for information, but it's actually the scammer using the fake site to steal your login, passport details, or credit card info.

Here’s how to stay safe:
• Never click a link in a text or email about a flight change.
• Go directly to the airline’s official app or website; that’s where real updates appear.
• Beware of urgency. Airlines don’t force you to ā€œconfirm within 10 minutesā€ or lose your seat.
• Don’t call the phone number in the message. Many are fake ā€œcustomer serviceā€ lines run by scammers.

If you’re really unsure:
Open your airline’s official app or call the number on your ticket or the airline’s website - not the one in a text.

Safe travels and happy Thanksgiving from the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office! šŸ¦ƒāœˆļø

🚚 Online Marketplace Scam Series — Day 3
Beware the ā€œFake Pickup / Fake Shipping Labelā€ Scam

Selling something on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist? Be cautious if a ā€œbuyerā€ says:

• ā€œI can’t meet in person.ā€
• ā€œI’ll send a courier to pick it up.ā€
• ā€œI already paid—check your email!ā€
• ā€œYou just need to pay a small shipping fee first. I’ll reimburse you.ā€

ā— These are major red flags.

Here's how the scam works:

šŸ‘‰ The scammer pretends they’ve paid you, and you receive an official-looking fake email from a ā€œcourierā€ or ā€œpayment serviceā€ saying the money is pending.

šŸ‘‰ They pressure you to pay a shipping or insurance fee up front, often through Venmo, Cash App, or gift cards. They promise it will be refunded… but it never is.

šŸ‘‰ Or, they send a fake prepaid shipping label and have a ā€œcourierā€ pick up your item before you realize no payment ever came through.

By the time the you notice, both the money and the item are gone.

How to Protect Yourself

āœ” Only sell locally and meet in public places.
āœ” Never pay a buyer’s ā€œshipping fee.ā€ Legit buyers don’t ask for this.
āœ” Ignore emails claiming payment is ā€œon hold.ā€ Real platforms don’t do that.
āœ” Check your actual bank or payment app - don’t trust screenshots.
āœ” If the buyer refuses to meet in person, walk away.

Fraud thrives on urgency and confusion. Slow down, double-check, and protect yourself and your money.
