Mizzou PLG-Progressive Librarians Guild

Mizzou PLG-Progressive Librarians Guild Progressive Librarians Guild is a national organization that provides "a forum for the open exchange of radical views on library issues."

The University of Missouri's PLG chapter exists to serve the same purpose, but on a local level.

NPR talks to Jessamyn West (librarian) about the difficulties many libraries, especially rural ones, have obtaining consistent funding.

Most Americans say public libraries are important to the community — but eight states don't actually support them. Texas has cut budgets drastically; in Vermont, local librarians must go hand in hand to town meetings every year. Neda Ulaby reports on the landscape of library funding across the U.S.

"If the courts uphold the decision most counties in Kentucky will require a 51 percent vote simply to keep their libraries open. The turnout in off year elections is notoriously low and negative voters usually turn out in much higher numbers. If the initiatives lose each Kentucky household will be $50 richer. But their communities will be immeasurably poorer."

The Tea Party argues that a library tax increase of any size, no matter how trivial, is unwarranted because of economic hardship. A far more compelling argument is that times of economic distress demand a larger, not as smaller information commons.
