Yesterday, at approximately 4:04 PM, the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire on 2nd Street. Engine 1 arrived on scene first-due and found heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the building.

Within the first several minutes, crews deployed three 1.75” crosslays and one 2.5” crosslay, quickly applying large volumes of water to knock down the heavy fire load. Their aggressive interior attack played a critical role in preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining businesses.

While three neighboring stores sustained heavy smoke and ceiling damage, firefighters successfully contained the fire to the building of origin, significantly reducing the potential for further loss.

Crews remained on scene for approximately four hours to complete fire suppression operations and ensure the area was safe. There were no reported injuries to civilians or fire personnel.

The Columbia Fire Department extends its appreciation to Tri-Community Fire Department, Columbia Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and AAA Ambulance Service for their assistance and support during this incident.

This incident had the potential to result in far greater destruction across multiple businesses on the block. However, due to the immediate, aggressive actions taken by responding firefighters, the fire was stopped before it could spread beyond the building of origin. Their training, quick decision-making, and teamwork directly prevented a much more devastating outcome and protected a significant portion of the community’s property and livelihood. Thank you everybody for your hard work!
