Over the past two weeks, Tyrrell County 4-H has had the pleasure of hosting Mrs. Yuki, an adult chaperone with the 4-H International Exchange Program. Following NC 4-H Congress, she stayed in Tyrrell County with her host family, Lynda Mastronardo and her son, Sarde Howell, while experiencing many of the unique opportunities and attractions our community has to offer.

During her visit, Mrs. Yuki and Sarde joined me for a trip to the Eastern 4-H Center, where she observed campers participating in a variety of summer camp activities. She also attended our floral arrangement workshop hosted by Sand in Bloom Flower Farm and, yesterday, graciously prepared an authentic Japanese meal for Michelle, Savannah, and me. Sharing this meal was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Japanese culture while celebrating the friendships and connections that make the 4-H program so meaningful.

Today, Mrs. Yuki travels to Elizabeth City to continue her four-week stay in North Carolina before returning home to Japan. We are grateful for the time we shared with her and wish her safe travels and all the best as she continues her exchange experience.

What an unforgettable week our group had at Eastern 4-H Center! Every day brought new adventures, from kayaking, archery, and climbing the rock wall to swimming, campfires, arts and crafts, and exploring the outdoors. There was never a shortage of fun, learning, or excitement.

Beyond the activities, camp provided experiences that will stay with our campers for years to come. They formed new friendships, discovered new abilities, worked together as a team, and grew in confidence. Watching them support one another, try new things, and meet challenges with positive attitudes was truly rewarding.

We couldn't be prouder of everything our campers accomplished during the week. The memories they made, the friendships they built, and the lessons they learned made this an experience to remember. We're so thankful for this amazing opportunity and can't wait to do it all again next year!

What a wonderful day at Sand in Bloom - (Sandi Brickhouse Smith)!

Our participants had an amazing time exploring the beautiful flower fields, where everyone had the opportunity to cut their own fresh flowers. After gathering their favorite blooms, they put their creativity to work by arranging them into beautiful bouquets to take home.

We also had the pleasure of spending the morning with Yuki, a chaperone from Japan! She is currently staying with Sarde Howell and his mother, Lynda, and it was such a joy to have her join our group!

Throughout the summer, these dedicated young readers each completed 24 books, demonstrating an outstanding commitment to reading and learning. To celebrate their achievement, they were rewarded with a special trip to the movie theater to see Toy Story 5.

Last week, Tyrrell County 4-H members attended NC 4-H Congress in Raleigh, where they participated in leadership workshops, explored civic engagement, and connected with fellow 4-H members from across North Carolina. The week provided valuable opportunities for personal growth while strengthening the leadership skills needed to make a positive impact in their communities.

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our members during Congress. Will Odom was inducted into the prestigious NC 4-H Honor Club, one of the organization's highest honors. Will Odom and Sarde Howell were recognized for participating in National 4-H Trips in 2026, while Mack Odom earned a National 4-H Trip in 2027. Evie Muthler and Slade Sloan (Dare County) were invited to perform in the NC 4-H Talent Showcase before a statewide audience. We also recognize Will Odom for representing Tyrrell County as a candidate for North Carolina 4-H State Office. Although he was not elected, his willingness to step forward and serve exemplifies the leadership, courage, and commitment that define 4-H.
