Every month, Hammond School Service Learning Coordinator Anne Fowler brings students to Transitions to serve meals — and every time, something shifts.
“They always want to know how many people were fed, and they are always surprised at how many people receive a meal while they are there,” Anne says. “A lot of impact in a very short amount of time.”
For Anne, the goal goes beyond a single afternoon. She wants her students to become lifelong philanthropists — people who understand that giving back doesn’t require millions of dollars, just time and a heart to see others in need.
“My students don’t shy away from speaking to the clients. They always comment how nice the clients are and how appreciative they are. That is, unfortunately, not the way our society sees the unhoused.”
Serving a meal is an easy entry point. But for many of these students, it’s the beginning of something much bigger — a life of service that extends well beyond high school.
