WARE SHOALS DAM CONCERNS:
A big thank you to CONGRESSWOMAN SHERI BIGGS for emphasizing our position to the FERC and sending a copy of my previous letter as well.

Rep. Biggs continues to impress us with her attention to constituent matters.

We must continue to demand that this Federal Agency consider the desires of the affected residents and require Patriot Hydro to restore the impoundment to the same condition they found it.

Dana and I were so humbled when the voters and our supporters delivered our June primary victory by historic numbers in District 13.

Now we must pivot to the upcoming General Election campaign, which will be a part of the “mid-terms” deciding what our state and nation will look like in the near future.

The first step will be rallying our supporters to gear up for this essential effort.

Congratulations to Piedmont Agency on Aging who recently broke ground on a new MEALS ON WHEELS kitchen. The new facility will help deliver 650 meals a day to seniors unable to leave their homes.

This is especially meaningful to me as Dana and I took our kids along with us to deliver meals when they were growing up and we still remember some of the sweet relationships we made with seniors.

Happy to have Rep. Daniel Gibson with me to show our support and say thank you to Tracey Bedenbaugh, her staff and all the volunteers who make this ministry successful!

LAKE GREENWOOD INVESTIGATION UPDATE:

I spoke with the DES Director today and she advised that DES is almost finished pulling together a final data report in cooperation with DNR which is voluminous. The plan is to provide the final report to a panel of experts to evaluate the evidence and develop a “most probable cause” of the fish kill event.

We will continue to request clarity and finality in this matter.

Letter I sent out today to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on behalf of my constituents.

Tonight, Ware Shoals residents packed out a public hearing required by the federal government whenever a hydroelectric dam is closed.

Rather than fix issues they were cited for by FERC, Patriot Hydro has drained the water behind the dam causing massive erosion upriver and sediment deposits downriver.

I called an ad hoc meeting over a year ago in Columbia with all the stakeholders present to bring awareness to this issue.
At that meeting Patriot Hydro revealed that they now want to close out their operation and are required by federal regulation to pitch options to the residents for comment.

The room tonight was hot and so were the citizens. Residents testified that the draining of the impoundment has resulted in LOSS OF PROPERTY VALUES, RECREATION, TOURISM, LOCAL REVENUE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

They were clearly and adamantly in favor of restoring the dam to stop further erosion upstream and massive sediment deposits downstream.

Good for them for speaking out!

Mayor Bryan Ross is to be commended for moderating the meeting and letting the citizens air their legitimate grievances.

Although I am a mere state official and the federal govt has complete jurisdiction, I will be making a formal request on behalf of my constituents to FERC (and our federal representatives) to require Patriot Hydro to fully restore the Ware Shoals dam (that has been there for over 100 years) before more irreversible damage is done.

It was very sad to wake up this morning to be confronted with the passing of our Senator. I remember when Lindsey Graham ran for the first time and visited South Main Street Baptist Church right here in Greenwood.

He never forgot about us and more recently he visited our Greenwood Veterans Center to recognize those who served our country.

He devoted his entire life to public service, representing our state in both the U.S. House and the United States Senate with unwavering conviction and energy.

Please join me in praying for his sister, his family, his friends, and the many staff members and colleagues who served alongside him through the years. May God grant them comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.
