For more than three decades, Brian and Susan Thomas have helped shape the Forest Acres community through their leadership, volunteerism, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

At tonight’s City Council meeting, Mayor and Council were honored to present a resolution recognizing the Thomases for their extraordinary contributions to Forest Acres, including founding the Forest Acres Neighborhood Association (FANA), serving on City boards and committees, supporting community beautification efforts, and helping establish lasting partnerships through the Forest Acres Festival.

Their dedication has strengthened our neighborhoods, enriched our community, and set an example of what it means to be engaged citizens and good neighbors.

Please join us in thanking Brian and Susan for their many years of service and wishing them all the best as they begin a new chapter in the 💚🩵

A timeless vision for the future of Forest Acres. 🌳✨

This morning, City Council reviewed updated renderings and design concepts for the future six-acre Mall Park and Amphitheater project: a space intentionally designed to feel authentic, welcoming, warm, historic, and built to stand the test of time.

Because Forest Acres does not have a large inventory of historic buildings or preserved architectural landmarks, city leaders see this project as a unique opportunity to intentionally create that sense of timeless character and identity through thoughtful design and placemaking.

“This is the kind of project that can define a community for generations,” said Mayor Thomas Andrews. “We have the opportunity to create something that feels timeless and authentic to Forest Acres.”

Inspired by the character of historic Southern gathering spaces and legacy downtowns, the park design incorporates weathered brick, iron detailing, bronze accents, layered landscaping, and classic architectural elements intended to create a rich, established feel from day one.

Council also reviewed updates to the amphitheater design, including a more traditional roof structure meant to better complement the park’s timeless aesthetic while giving the venue its own unique architectural identity.

“We want this park to feel timeless — like it has always been part of Forest Acres,” said Mayor Pro Tem Haskell Kibler. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create the kind of place and character communities are remembered for.”

The project is expected to go out for bid this fall, with construction anticipated to take approximately 12 to 18 months once underway.

City leaders will also begin exploring naming opportunities and philanthropic partnerships tied to the park and amphitheater. Officials said future naming and branding will help complement the already strong Forest Acres identity while creating a destination recognized throughout the Midlands and across South Carolina as the top city to call home 🏡

Planning for the future starts with conversations today.

This week, City Administrator Shaun Greenwood joined the Forest Acres Rotary Club to share updates on the exciting growth and momentum happening across Forest Acres — from economic development and strategic planning to just how soon we can see a rebirth in development at the former Richland Mall site and the long-term vision helping shape our city for the next 10–20 years.

Joined by Director of Communications Lynnsey Baker and Councilman Stephen Oliver, a proud member of Forest Acres Rotary, the discussion highlighted how the City continues working proactively to preserve the character of Forest Acres while planning thoughtfully for the future.

After serving in the army, Mr. Greenwood first began working as a code enforcement officer for the City of Forest Acres. While working his way up and getting public administration higher education, he was briefly pulled to the City of Cayce where he served as the assistant city administrator before Forest Acres pulled him back for the top spot. That council’s top goal was to keep our character, grow, and also reimagine the Richland Mall site. Fun fact, Greenwood cold called Southeastern in 2020 after hearing of their successes in Aiken and Hilton Head. And the rest is history.

Next up, Mr. Greenwood is Harvard bound for an impressive leadership program. Our city is truly lucky to have him lead city staff.

Thank you to the Forest Acres Rotary Club for the opportunity to share the vision, progress, and partnerships helping move our city forward.

We were excited to join the Columbia Chamber for the ribbon cutting welcoming Tropical Smoothie Cafe to Forest Acres!

Located in the Lowes Foods Shopping Center at 4711 Forest Drive, the new café is another exciting addition to the growing energy and momentum happening across our city.

Councilman Stephen Oliver joined City staff in celebrating the occasion and welcoming owner Dax and his team to the community.

Dax, who has been with Tropical Smoothie Cafe for 10 years, shared that they chose Forest Acres because of the incredible growth, positive momentum, and excitement surrounding the city — and they wanted to be part of it. We’re grateful they chose to invest in our community and can’t wait for residents to stop by and support this new business.

As part of the grand opening celebration, the Forest Acres location is also offering a FREE smoothie with any food purchase today and tomorrow only. Stop by, check out the new space, and help us welcome them to the community! 🌴🥤
