People First of Boone County We are a group that promotes the use of people first language in media and every day speech. We go to many events and rallies to promote our cause.

We are active in lobbying for better laws for people with disabilities.

We are a nonprofit organization. We do lots of things in and around the state of Missouri. We go to the capital and talk to our legislators and senators to help get bills passed in the senate. We go to different conferences in and around the state of Missouri, and some of us have been to the "Self-advocate: Becoming Empowered" conference. Other state conferences we have been to include: California, Georgia, Indiana, and Missouri. I also hope some of us will get to go to Minnesota in 2012.

People FIrst Of Boone County Became a organisation back in the year of 1998
And started as a small group and the past years we have Became a group of
15 to 25 members in the past years. We have done Fundraising to help people with disabilities
facing challenges beyond their means. Advocating for improved,expanden more
accessible public transportation; Enhancing the community aesthetically by tending
an Adopt -a -Spot: Partnering with others to grow and share produce in a community
garden project. Creating relationships with state legislators and educating them about
issues important to people with disabilities. Partnering with the Missouri Library
Association to produce a disability etiquette training video for distrbution to public
entities across the state. Increasing awareness in the community through participation in
Columbia annual holiday parade. Through hosting seminars and social gatherings helping
people with disabilities learn about and exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
Our chapter joined the Safe School Coalition in March 2011. We're still working with journalism
students and raisinging awareness about who we are and about respectful Language. We was
apart of the Roots and Blues This year some of our members ran in the 1/2 Marathon
and the 10k .
