September is recognized as National Senior Center Month, a time to celebrate the important role senior centers play in communities.

National Senior Center Month gives us an opportunity to recognize not only the programs and services offered, but most importantly, the older adults who bring our centers to life.

At the Tyrrell County Senior Adult Activity Center, we are proud to be a place where our seniors can stay active, continue learning, build friendships, laugh together, and know that they are valued.

This September, we celebrate our center, our community, and especially our seniors—the heart of everything we do! 💜

Here's our September newsletter! We hope to see you at an upcoming activity!

🎶 A Little Co****le & Dolly! 🎶

Today, some of our seniors enjoyed a little friendly competition with indoor co****le, all while listening to the music of the one and only Dolly Parton, may she rest in peace.💕🎵

It was a fun way to spend the afternoon—and a special opportunity to enjoy some of Dolly’s timeless songs and celebrate the joy she brought to so many through her music. 🌟

A little tossing, a little singing, and lots of smiles! ❤️

What a wonderful and blessed day we had at the Tyrrell County Senior Adult Activity Center!

Today was filled with smiles, laughter, creativity, and fellowship as we enjoyed our Sip & Paint, shared lunch and cake, and most importantly, took time to celebrate some very special senior citizens in honor of National Senior Citizens Day! 🎉

We were honored to recognize three outstanding individuals:

Honorable Mention – Ms. Joe Bowser
Honorable Mention – Mr. David Kitts
AND
Tyrrell County Senior Adult Activity Center Senior Citizen of the Year – Mr. Steve Ralph

Mr. Ralph, thank you for your time, your presence, and the positive impact you have made in our community. It was truly our honor to recognize you as our Senior Citizen of the Year!

A special thank you to Mr. Clegg for taking the time to stop by and share this special occasion with us, and to Eric Roughton, who served one of the members of our Senior Citizens Day committee. Your support and participation helped make today even more meaningful.

Today was about more than an award—it was about honoring the lives, wisdom, service, and contributions of our senior citizens. We are blessed to serve them, celebrate them, and remind them just how valuable they are to Tyrrell County.

Happy National Senior Citizens Day!
Today, we celebrate YOU!

Today we traveled to Italy without ever leaving the Senior Center! Our Armchair Travel to Italy was filled with food, fun, music, and a little Italian flair. ❤️🤍💚

Our seniors learned some Italian words, enjoyed a video tour of Italy, and looked at vacation pictures from Italy. We also played a fun “Mystery Bag” game, where everyone had to reach in, feel an object, and guess what it was! 👜🤔

Then it was time for our Italian cooking class! We made delicious Italian Fruit & Ricotta Cups and enjoyed samples of our creations along with some wonderful ziti made by our Director.

Of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without music! We danced to Fratello Limoncello and listened to some classic Dean Martin songs. 🎶

It was a wonderful day of learning, laughter, food, music, and friendship. Grazie to everyone who helped make our Italian adventure so much fun! 🇮🇹❤️

Calling Our Local Churches!

We’re excited to partner with the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging to bring free educational programs and valuable resources to our community.

Topics include Healthy Aging, Medicare, Dementia & Alzheimer’s, Fall Prevention, Caregiving, Elder Abuse Prevention, Emergency Preparedness and more.

We are looking for local churches willing to host a program Monday–Friday for their congregation and/or community.

If your church would be interested in hosting, please reach out to us! Let’s work together to educate, empower, and support our older adults.

Good morning! I am doing a little research and would love some community input.

For our seniors who live outside the Columbia area, I am gathering information at this time to see what options may be available and whether there is a need in these communities for home-delivered meals or boxed meals to elderly residents in the Bulls Bay, Gum Neck, and Alligator/Soundside areas.

If this service were available, are there churches, community organizations, or other covered/secure locations in these areas that would be willing to serve as a designated meal drop-off location, IN ADDITION to be a volunteer coordinator?

Again, I am just doing research, NOTHING IS DIFINITE AT THIS TIME.

Please feel free to share this post, especially with family, friends, churches, and community leaders in the Bulls Bay, Gum Neck, Alligator, and Soundside areas.

Our goal is to find ways to better reach and serve our seniors throughout Tyrrell County.
