🚨 BREAKING: Missouri’s congressional map fight is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Missouri Republican officials are asking Justice Brett Kavanaugh to block a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that put the 2025 congressional map before voters as Proposition A and ordered the Nov. 3 election to use the congressional districts from 2022 and 2024.

The state argues switching maps after the August primary would disrupt the election. But county election officials have disputed claims that the change is unworkable, telling the court that voters can be returned to their previous districts through Missouri’s voter-registration system.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:

Kavanaugh has ordered People Not Politicians to respond by noon Monday. Missouri officials want a decision by Sept. 14, ahead of the Sept. 19 deadline for military and overseas ballots.

For now, the Missouri Supreme Court ruling stands.

Fact or Fiction Friday: More states are putting panic alarms in schools. What does that actually mean?

FACT: More states are adopting versions of what is commonly called “Alyssa’s Law,” named for Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old killed in the 2018 Parkland school shooting.

But the laws are not all the same.

Some states require specific panic-alert technology in schools. Others allow districts to consider or adopt wearable, mobile, silent, or wireless alert systems that can connect school staff directly with emergency responders.

According to the Missouri Independent, Illinois, Virginia, and West Virginia enacted new laws this year, bringing the number of states with some form of Alyssa’s Law to 13. Another dozen states are considering similar legislation.

The technology is also used for much more than active-shooter situations. A 2026 report from CENTEGIX, a company that sells wearable school panic-alert systems, found that 88% of more than 346,000 alerts during the 2025–2026 school year involved everyday incidents such as fights or students leaving campus without permission. About 10% involved medical emergencies, while 2% involved suspicious behavior or campuswide emergencies.

That data shows the systems are being used frequently. It does not, by itself, prove that panic buttons prevent school shootings.

Missouri has also considered Alyssa’s Law legislation, but there is not currently a statewide requirement that all Missouri schools provide wearable panic buttons to staff.

School safety deserves facts, context, and careful policy discussion—not fear-based headlines.

FACT OR FICTION FRIDAY: What’s happening with Missouri’s congressional maps?

Missouri’s congressional map fight took another turn Friday morning. Here’s what you need to know.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the referendum challenging the congressional map passed by Republican lawmakers in 2025 must appear on the Nov. 3 ballot as Proposition A.

Why does that matter?

Under the Missouri Constitution, legislation subject to a valid referendum is suspended while voters decide whether to approve or reject it.

The court therefore ordered Missouri to conduct the Nov. 3 congressional election using the districts from the 2022 and 2024 elections—not the 2025 map used in this August’s primary.

Secretary of State Denny Hoskins asked the court to pause that order while the state seeks review from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Friday morning, the Missouri Supreme Court denied his request without comment.

Hoskins argues that changing maps now creates logistical problems and could interfere with federal deadlines for military and overseas ballots.

That claim is disputed. Two Missouri county clerks—one Democrat and one Republican—told the court that switching back can be accomplished by changing which congressional map controls in the state voter database.

As of Friday morning, the Missouri Supreme Court’s order remains in effect, while state officials have said they intend to seek U.S. Supreme Court review.

The legal fight may continue. Stay informed. Check the facts. Democracy depends on it.
