EXCELLENCE IN ACTION. Fatherhood, fraternity and footwork were the focus of recognitions at Tuesday’s County Council meeting:

• A resolution named June as Forging Strong Fathers and Families Month in Richland County, acknowledging the efforts of the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families to position fathers for success through education, access to resources and advocacy.
• A proclamation honored the Omicron Iota Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. for four decades of service, as the chapter recently celebrated its 40th charter anniversary. It was established May 30, 1986, in Columbia.
• A proclamation praised the Blythewood High School girls track team for achieving a "four-peat" after securing the title of SC High School League Class 5A Division I champions. It's the team's fourth straight state title.

Richland County congratulates these groups and individuals for their service, accomplishments and impact in our community.

STAY READY. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 2023 annual National Household Survey, only 50 percent of Americans feel confident in their ability to prepare for a disaster. Proper preparation is essential for safety in case of emergencies and natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes and earthquakes.

To ensure your family is equipped, take time to review items to include in your household emergency supply kit in the slides below.

AG + ART APPRECIATION. On Sunday, the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD) hosted supporters of the County’s annual Ag + Art Tour at a Volunteer Appreciation Party in downtown Columbia.

The event gave volunteers, sponsors and tour site hosts a chance to mingle and celebrate the people who make the tour possible. RSWCD staff and site participants gave remarks. County Councilmen Paul Livingston (District 4) and Don Weaver (District 6) spoke on the importance of championing the County’s diverse agriculture and rich artistry.

Our volunteers can’t wait to see you this weekend at the Ag + Art Tour of Richland County, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday!

FILL THE BOOKBAG. FILL A HEART. Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is hosting a back-to-school drive to gather school supplies for children in foster care. The drive offers multiple ways for residents and organizations to help children get ready for the upcoming school year, including:

• Bringing donated items to CASA’s headquarters in Room 407 of the County Judicial Center at 1701 Main St., Columbia
• Sponsoring children directly: $100 (covers supplies for five children), $250 (12 children), or $500 (25 children)
• Hosting a school supply drive with your work team, local nonprofit or community organization to gather items to donate

Let’s work together to give County children the gear to start the school year feeling eager, confident and ready to learn. The effort runs through July 4.
