Mid Missouri DSA Steering Committee Statement on the United State's Assault on Venezuela

Mid-Missouri DSA condemns in the strongest terms the attack carried out by the United States against Venezuela, as well as the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. Our chapter endorses National DSA’s statement condemning this criminal act of imperialism against a sovereign and independent nation. We urge all of our members to stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and demand an end to US aggression in Latin America. The Mid-Missouri chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America opposes the proposed “pedestrian safety” ordinance in Columbia, Missouri. This ordinance uses the language of safety to justify increased policing and to target folks who are unhoused, asking for help, resting or engaging in protest. It would restrict how people use public space by effectively banning panhandling, limiting demonstrations, and making daily life more difficult for those already struggling. Instead of addressing poverty, it punishes people for being poor and visible. Our chapter affirms that everyone should have the right to move, speak, and exist in public without fear of persecution. That includes the right to ask for support, to protest injustice, and to take part in community life, regardless of housing status or income. Columbia does not need more punitive laws. We urge City Council to reject this ordinance.

SNAP benefits are paused because politicians shut down the government and are using working families’ food assistance as a bargaining chip. While they argue, our neighbors are the ones going hungry.

Yesterday, all across the country, people stood up against Trump and the wealthy elites who put profit over people. The No Kings 2.0 protests showed that when working people come together to fight for fair wages, immigrant rights, trans rights, and real democracy, we are powerful.

Mid-Missouri DSA joined No Kings to show that defeating hate and greed takes all of us, organized and united. We’re proud to be building that movement right here in Columbia.

That being said, the work does not end here. It did not start here. Organizers across this country have been building movements for justice long before Trump, fighting for workers’ rights, racial justice, and true democracy. No Kings is a small and new part of that ongoing struggle. Mid Missouri DSA does not desire a return to the status quo or brunch. We demand liberation.
