From nestling to ready to take flight. This very handsome Purple Martin came in as a tiny little guy who suffered injuries after falling from the nest. He is doing great now and is one step closer to release. We look forward to seeing him fly free soon.

As the Executive Director of “The Nest” I recently had the opportunity to participate in a PBS feature highlighting the work being done within Carolina Wildlife Center.

While I may have been the one speaking on camera, this story has never been about one person, especially not me. It belongs to an incredible team of wildlife rehabilitators, volunteers, veterinarians, interns, educators and support staff who show up every single day to give wild animals a second chance.

What viewers see in a few minutes on television represents thousands of hours of animal care, late-night feedings, emergency rescues, medical treatments, educational programs, habitat maintenance, fundraising efforts, and an unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation. Our mission has existed for 30 years, providing a second chance to over 100,000 animals.

I am fortunate to work with and support some of the most dedicated and selfless people I have ever met. I am simply the one in front of the camera or raising funds to keep our doors open. The real work, happens inside those 4 walls, 24/7 365. They celebrate the victories, carry the heartbreaks, and show up everyday to provide a second chance to wildlife in need.

I hope this PBS feature on Making It Grow helps shine a light on the extraordinary work happening inside our center each day and the remarkable team that makes it possible.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, supporters, and community for helping make this mission a reality.

With two baby pileated woodpeckers currently in care, we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about just how cool these birds are.

Did you know?

Pileated woodpeckers (PIWO) are the largest woodpecker in North American. The average PIWO measures over a foot in length with a wingspan of over 2 feet. That's pretty large when considering their stabbing abilities.

Speaking of stabbing abilities, their nest construction is quite unique. They often choose dead or dying trees and create an oblong shaped cavity to raise their young in. After the babies are grown they move on leaving the cavity open for new inhabitants. Other wildlife such as owls, bats and ducks often utilize the cozy accommodations.

The primary diet of a pileated woodpecker is ants!

Last but not least, PIWO'S are one of very few species of birds that show sexual dimorphism as nestlings. Based on the photos, can you tell who is male and who is female?

Our center has tried to avoid pleading for donations since I came on board in 2024. Despite no state or federal funding, we've managed to make our very limited budget work year after year with donor support. We couldn't and wouldn't be here without you!

Today is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and the only time we flood your inbox with ask after ask. But that's just how important the work we're doing is, and the day is coming to a close.

As I seek to secure more stable funding, we must secure significant funds to keep our doors open, especially during this time of year. We need your support; this is a critical moment for Carolina Wildlife Center. We provide life-saving care to thousands of animals every single year and are the Midlands' go-to resource for wildlife rehabilitation.

Every single donation counts; please share this with your friends, family, or on your socials. South Carolina Wildlife needs you; please help us help them!

We are halfway to $50,000! Our current donations for today are right over $26,000, and there is plenty of time to donate to get us to $50,000.

Your donations mean the difference between us keeping our doors open and providing life saving care to thousands of animals a year or having to cease operations.

Please donate to support us today!
