🌊 The future of Columbia’s riverfront starts with thoughtful conversation and collaboration.

Mayor Daniel Rickenmann and Councilman Sam Johnson recently joined the Post and Courier Columbia's “From the Congaree to the Capitol” panel discussion, taking part in an important conversation about Columbia’s riverfront, environmental priorities and the opportunities ahead for our city.

From expanding public access and connected trails to protecting our waterways and balancing growth with environmental stewardship, Mayor Rickenmann and Councilman Johnson highlighted the City’s commitment to creating a riverfront that serves our community while protecting the natural resources that make Columbia unique.

The City of Columbia is invested in smart, sustainable growth and in preserving the Congaree River for generations to come.

🌳 The next Beat the Heat quarterly event is coming up!

The City of Columbia and Columbia Green are hosting the next free educational event on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Busby Street Community Center, 1735 Busby St.

The quarterly series highlights the importance of a healthy urban tree canopy and gives residents the opportunity to learn how they can help make a difference. This month’s event will feature the connection between trees and public health and Columbia Green's newly launched Trees for Campuses initiative. It will include information on how to receive up to three free shade trees for your home or up to 50 trees for eligible school, church and community center campuses.

Come learn how planting and caring for trees can help reduce urban heat and contribute to a healthier, more livable Columbia.

Mayor Daniel Rickenmann welcomed attendees and shared remarks at the Building Hope for Children Conference hosted by Children's Trust of South Carolina.

The conference brought nearly 600 professionals from across South Carolina to Columbia to connect, learn and share strategies focused on strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect.

The City of Columbia was proud to welcome this group to our community and support the important work being done to build a stronger future for South Carolina’s children and families.

Join the conversation about homelessness.

The City of Columbia invites the community to a special viewing of Beyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness on Thursday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Spotlight Cinemas Capital 8, 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard.

Following the film, attendees are invited to participate in a forum and panel discussion focused on moving from awareness to action and exploring how communities across South Carolina can work together to create meaningful, sustainable solutions to homelessness.

Mosquito control efforts are continuing in the City of Columbia, and we want to make sure residents who may be affected by mosquito control treatments know how to contact us.

If you are allergic or sensitive to permethrin, deltamethrin or tau-fluvalinate, please contact the City’s Vector Control team at 803-545-4229 or [email protected] so appropriate precautions can be taken.

Beekeepers: Please contact Vector Control with the location of your active hives so they can be considered during mosquito control operations.

Residents can also help reduce mosquito activity by eliminating standing water around homes, cleaning clogged gutters, maintaining pools and keeping outdoor containers from collecting water.

Thank you for helping keep Columbia safe and our community informed.

This morning, the City of Columbia celebrated the lasting connections between our community and cities around the world with a special Sister Cities signage unveiling at City Hall. 🌎

Mayor Daniel Rickenmann joined former Mayor Bob Coble, Richland County Councilmember Paul Livingston for Council and The Columbia World Affairs Council Director Dickson Monk to recognize Columbia’s international partnerships with:

Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Kaiserslautern, Germany
Accra, Ghana
Taichung, Taiwan
Naju-si, South Korea

These Sister City relationships strengthen Columbia’s international connections and create opportunities for cultural exchange, engagement and partnership around the world.

⚾️ The final homestand of the 2026 season is here!

And if you haven’t made it out to celebrate the Columbia Fireflies’ 10th anniversary season, this is your last chance. The Fireflies take on the Charleston RiverDogs at Segra Park through Sunday, August 30, with five nights of baseball, giveaways, themed entertainment and one final fireworks show. 🎆

📝 Calling all Columbia poets! Applications are still open for the next Columbia SC Poet Laureate.

Established by City Council in 2014, the Poet Laureate position provides an opportunity for a local poet to engage the community through poetry and highlight Columbia’s vibrant literary arts scene.

Current Poet Laureate Jennifer Bartell Boykin has helped grow the city’s poetry community through initiatives like the Solid City Poetry Festival and poetry workshops.

The City’s next Poet Laureate will be announced November 22 during Jennifer Bartell Boykin’s final reading as Poet Laureate.
