This week, the Boone County Office of Emergency Management hosted a two-day Reunification Exercise (REx) training presented by the I Love U Guys Foundation.

The training brought together school personnel, law enforcement, fire service, EMS, public health, emergency management, dispatch, and community partners from Boone County and beyond to learn and practice the Standard Reunification Method (SRM).

When people think about school emergencies, they often focus on the response to the incident itself. Equally important, however, is what happens afterward. Parents want to know where their children are, students need a safe and organized process for reconnecting with their families, and responders need a plan that reduces confusion during an already stressful situation.
The Standard Reunification Method provides a nationally recognized framework to help schools and public safety agencies safely reunite students with parents or guardians following an emergency, evacuation, or other incident requiring reunification.

Throughout the two-day training, participants worked through classroom instruction, discussions, and practical exercises designed to strengthen coordination among agencies and improve preparedness across our community.

Boone County OEM would like to thank the I Love U Guys Foundation for providing this important training, Columbia Public Schools for their partnership and support, COMO Parks and Recreation for hosting the event, and all of the agencies and organizations that invested their time to participate.

Preparedness is a team effort, and training like this helps ensure that if a crisis occurs, our community is better prepared to reunite families safely, efficiently, and compassionately.

Press Release: Severe Weather Expected This Afternoon in Boone County

Boone County, MO (June 11, 2026) – The National Weather Service (NWS) and the Boone County Office of Emergency Management continue to monitor the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms today across the region. In Boone County, storms will continue to move through into the evening hours. Possible hazards include hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and localized flooding.

Strong storms may impact the entire county as they move through the region, with an estimated onset of 3 p.m.– 6 p.m. All residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, stay aware of any watches or warnings in effect, and identify a safe shelter location ahead of time. For more information on how to stay safe during severe weather, please visit https://ready.boonemo.gov/severe-weather.asp.

Localized flooding may occur in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Use caution when traveling and never drive through water covering a roadway. Even shallow floodwater can be dangerous and may hide hazards and road damage beneath the surface.

Residents who experience property damage, downed trees, or other debris as a result of tonight's storm are encouraged to submit a report to the Boone County Office of Emergency Management as soon as it is safe to do so. Timely reporting helps local officials and public safety assess the scope of damage and coordinate an appropriate response.

To report storm damage or debris, visit: https://arcg.is/uqD5K0.

Residents are reminded to stay safe and avoid downed power lines or other hazardous conditions when assessing damage. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

🚨 Today, Boone County emergency responders participated in a hands-on Active Shooter Incident Management exercise coordinated by our office that focused on strengthening coordination during complex, high-stress incidents.

The exercise gave law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatch, hospital, and emergency management partners the opportunity to practice key response actions, including establishing command, coordinating staging, triage, casualty collection, Rescue Task Force operations, medical transport, and communication between agencies.

Exercises like this help responders build relationships, test procedures, and improve decision-making before a real emergency occurs. We appreciate all of the agencies, trainees, volunteers, and exercise participants who helped make today’s training possible.

Preparedness is a team effort, and today’s exercise was an important step in continuing to build a safer, more resilient Boone County.

✨💎 The final day of the 2026 Girls in Emergency Management Camp is complete! 💎✨

Campers wrapped up the week by learning Hands-Only CPR, practicing Stop the Bleed skills, and playing a cybersecurity board game focused on staying safe in the digital world.

We were honored to welcome Kathy Steinhoff for the 45th as our keynote speaker for graduation, where campers, counselors, and families gathered to celebrate the week with refreshments and cake.

That brings GEM Camp to a close until next year! Thank you to everyone who helped make this week such a meaningful experience for our campers.
