Engine 13-Columbia Fire Department Founded in 1958, the home of Engine Company 13, Station 13 is staffed by 4 Firefighters 24 hours a day.

Station 13 is located just north of downtown Columbia, and serves the densely-populated, historic, Eau-Claire area of Columbia, SC, along with semi-rural areas of Richland County. In 1996, Engine Company #5, located at Station 13, was disbanded and Rescue Company #1 was established at Headquarters. On April 22, 2003, a new Station 13 in Eau Claire was opened at 4112 Main Street, replacing the old

Ensor Avenue station, which was in great disrepair. Engine Company 13 is the busiest engine company in the Columbia Fire Department, responding to 2,580 emergencies in 2011 & 2,679 in 2010. E-13 responds to fires, rescues, wrecks, and medical emergencies. In addition, Engine Company 13 is one of five BLS engines in the Columbia Fire Department staffed with at least one EMT to assist Richland County EMS in providing the best quality of care possible to the citizens of Columbia and Richland County. The Columbia-Richland Fire Department is saddened to announce the sudden passing of Battalion Chief Joseph Casey Desso, who died during the night of September 13, 2021 following a brief illness.

Battalion Chief Desso bravely served the citizens of the City of Columbia and Richland County for 24 years. From the beginning of his career in 1997 he rose through the ranks of CRFD and was promoted to the rank of battalion chief in 2017.

Throughout his career Chief Desso worked to shape firefighters and future leaders of CRFD. As a fire captain in 2016 he was recognized along with the members of his crew for their work rescuing a person that was entrapped in a burning structure.

Chief Desso’s dedication and service to our community will never be forgotten. Details on funeral services to honor his life will be announced at a later date.

Our department continues to have resources in place for all members who may need support during this time of great loss. We thank the community for their outreach and sympathies to Chief Desso’s friends, family, colleagues and all who are in mourning.
