From the Columbia Fire Department:
On Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10:09 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1100 block of Pannell Street.
CFD arrived within four minutes to find heavy smoke and flames showing from a two-story residential structure. Firefighters immediately entered the home to simultaneously search for occupants and begin a fire attack. Crews quickly located the fire and began extinguishing the flames as additional companies arrived on scene to establish a water supply from nearby hydrants.
Incident commanders upgraded the response to a second alarm for additional personnel due to the extreme heat throughout the region and the location of the fire due to older architectural features. Throughout the incident, personnel were rotated to a designated location to shorten their work cycles, cool off and focus on hydration. The incident was under control within approximately 35 minutes of CFD arrival.
There were no occupants home at the time of CFD arrival and searches performed by firefighters verified there were no victims.
A total of eight fire companies, four chief officers, one safety captain and two fire marshals with 32 personnel responded to this incident.
The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion is currently conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
