Our Executive Director Dr. Delores Dacosta was honored to join the Waccamaw Indian People, South Carolina’s first state-recognized Native American tribe, on August 7, 2026, to celebrate Chief Harold "Buster" Hatcher’s retirement after 34 years of dedicated leadership and service.

The Chief Transition Ceremony also marked a new chapter in tribal leadership with the meaningful passing of the ceremonial staff to Chief Cheryl Cail, symbolizing the continuation of the tribe’s traditions, culture, and legacy into the future.

Congratulations to Chief Hatcher on 34 years of service, and congratulations to Chief Cail as she begins her new role as Chief.

Executive Director Dr. Delores Dacosta recently joined Raising Up The Lowcountry for an inspiring conversation on “Finding God’s Purpose in Your Life” at Halls Chophouse Nexton in Summerville.
Using the life cycle of a butterfly as a powerful metaphor, Dr. Dacosta shared how each season of life, including challenges, uncertainty, and transformation, can help prepare us to step into the purpose we were created for. Her message was a powerful reminder to trust the process, embrace every season, and continue moving forward with purpose.

On July 17, 2026, we participated in the Young CEOs Summer Camp Shark Tank Business Plan Competition to witness Young CEOs' creativity, determination, and innovative thinking as they shared their business ventures with the community.
Students in grades 4–12 had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas, showcase their products, and gain real-world entrepreneurial experience. We were proud to support this event, with members of our staff serving as judges.
