CMDC is organized for charitable purposes in accordance with I.R.C. § 501(c)(3). CMDC’s charitable purposes are delineated in the following four categories:
(1) Community Development: In accordance with IRS Publication 557, Tax-Exempt Status for your Organization, erection or maintenance of public buildings, monuments, or works, lessening the burden of government, and combating community deterior
ation are charitable purposes for purposes of I.R.C. § 501(c)(3); and engaging in community development activities and furthering economic development and social welfare by fostering increased employment opportunities as set forth herein falls under that umbrella. (2) Environmental Conservation: In accordance with Rev. Rul. 80-278, it is generally recognized that efforts to preserve and protect the natural environment for the benefit of the public constitute a charitable purpose within the meaning of I.R.C. §501(c)(3), and that the promotion and protection of natural resources has been recognized by Congress as serving a broad public benefit. (3) Elderly Services: In accordance with IRS Publication 557, Tax-Exempt Status for your Organization, relief of the poor, distressed, or underprivileged is a charitable purpose for purposes of I.R.C. § 501(c)(3), and the provisioning of services to the elderly falls under that umbrella. (4) Transportation Improvement: In accordance with IRS Publication 557, Tax-Exempt Status for your Organization, the erection or maintenance of public works and the lessening the burden of government are charitable purposes under I.R.C. § 501(c)(3), and improving public transportation in the Central Midlands Area falls under that umbrella.
