COMO Adapted Sports and Recreation

COMO Adapted Sports and Recreation Our page is to promote life enrichment through the participation of Special Olympic sports! No athlete has to compete, but is given the opportunity to.

Our Adapted Sports Program offers 9 sports in which athletes have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics events and tournaments. Those 9 sports offered:

-Basketball
-Bocce
-Bowling
-Golf
-Softball
-Swim
-Tennis
-Track and Field
-Volleyball

Each sport has a season in which their practices and competitions occur. For Example, our basketball season goes on from December to March. From ages

8 and up, we give everyone at all levels of play the opportunity to learn each of our 9 sports from the bottom up. We have a team for someone of every level. So if you or someone you know is interested in learning or playing a sport, please contact Jessica Sida at 874-7312 or [email protected] to get more information.

What an incredible season for our Track & Field athletes! We had 28 athletes compete in a variety of events, including running, walking, throwing, jumping, and relays. Their hard work and determination were on full display throughout the competition.

Our athletes brought home an amazing collection of awards, earning more than 23 gold medals, 19 silver medals, 9 bronze medals, as well as multiple 4th-place ribbons and participation ribbons. Our relay teams also had an outstanding performance, taking home 2 first place finishes, 2 second place finishes, and 1 third place finish.

We are so proud of our athletes and all they accomplished this season. A heartfelt thank you to all of the volunteers, coaches, families, and supporters who helped make the season possible. Your encouragement and dedication played a vital role in our athletes' success.

Our team brought 16 swimmers to compete in both individual events and relay races, and they showed up ready to make waves! Through their hard work, our athletes brought home more than 18 gold medals, 11 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, several 4th-place finishes, and participation ribbons.

What makes us most proud isn't just the hardwareโ€”itโ€™s the incredible growth, and perseverance these athletes demonstrated all season long. From early practices to race day, they continually pushed themselves, supported their teammates, and represented our program with pride.

A huge congratulations to all of our swimmers on an outstanding season! We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteer coaches, families, and supporters who helped make this season such a success.

๐Ÿ State Tournament Spotlight: Volleyball ๐Ÿ

As we continue celebrating our athletes' incredible performances at the State Tournament, we're kicking things off by recognizing our volleyball teams!

This year, we had the privilege of bringing four volleyball teams with Columbia Adapted Parks & Recreation. Our athletes worked hard, supported one another, and demonstrated outstanding teamwork throughout the tournament.

We're proud to share that all four teams brought home silver medals! Their dedication and team spirit were on full display, and we couldn't be more proud of their accomplishments.

We would also like to recognize one athlete for a special achievement. Congratulations to Taysir, who was honored with the Sportsmanship Award at the tournament! Your positive attitude, respect for others, and outstanding character truly embody the spirit of Special Olympics.

Thank you to all of our volleyball athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters for an unforgettable volleyball season.

Two weeks ago, our athletes traveled to Kirksville to compete in the SOMO State Summer Games! Throughout the weekend, athletes worked hard and proudly represented our program while competing in four sports: swimming, volleyball, powerlifting, and track & field.

Beyond competition, athletes experienced all that the State Games have to offer. They had the option to stay in the dorms, participated in Opening Ceremonies, attended the dance, enjoyed bingo, and made countless memories with friends from our program and across the state.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication, sportsmanship, and determination our athletes displayed throughout the weekend. This was an amazing experience both on and off the field of play!

Stay tuned over the coming days as we highlight each sport and celebrate the accomplishments of our athletes at the 2026 SOMO State Summer Games!

What an AWESOME experience one of our flag football teams, The Columbia Flames, got to participate in! Thanks to the Special Olympics of Missouri for allowing us to compete in the NFL Music City Blitz Tournament in Nashville Tennessee! We got to play on the official NFL Titans stadium and field which was soooo cool! The Tennessee Special Olympics staff were AMAZING! They hosted an official combine for all athletes to participate in and then a 4 game tournament bracket! We even got to run out of the tunnel with smoke and all! Unfortunately we took 4th place in the highest division but we had a blast and learned a lot! We won 1 out of our 4 games. Tough competition! We played a team from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana! We hope to be back one day! I want to thank our coaches, parents, and staff for all the help making this happen! Itโ€™s an experience we will remember forever!
