Yesterday’s SCRPA “Building Your Leadership Path” Women’s Leadership Workshop was empowering and a powerful reminder of the strength, purpose and influence women carry with us everywhere we go.

One message that truly resonated with me was that we are never “just” our titles. A position may describe what we do, but it does not define everything we are. Each of us brings something unique to the table-our experiences, our perspectives, our resilience and our own individual power.

When women come together, share their experiences and encourage one another, we strengthen more than our own leadership, we strengthen the women around us and coming behind us.

Today is the beginning of Be SMART Week… A time to highlight our community’s shared responsibility to keep fi****ms safely stored, locked and secured in our homes and out of the reach of children.

Thank you to Assistant City Manager Henry Simons for welcoming our community partners and reinforcing the importance of this lifesaving effort. I also thank Krystle Holmes-Gay for facilitating today’s program and supporting the local partners who shared valuable information about this initiative. And, of course, JudiGatson (jag) moderating the panel discussion. 🩵

Our county counterparts, law enforcement agencies, school districts and community organizations all play an important role in promoting responsible gun ownership and protecting our children. When we work together, we help create safer homes, stronger families and a safer Columbia for everyone.

I’m continually inspired by the incredible young people throughout Columbia and across our great state who are pursuing their passions, stepping into leadership, and making a positive impact in their communities.

It is part of my vision for Columbia to be a vibrant city where the next generation can not only live, work, and play, but truly thrive and succeed… whether they are pursuing a career, building a business, developing a talent, enjoying a hobby, or answering the call to civic and community service.

Our new Miss Teen South Carolina, Logan 💕💕 is a wonderful example of that next generation of leadership. Her humility, poise, grace, and confidence are matched by the meaningful work she is already doing throughout our community. It is always exciting to see a young woman represent our state with such excellence while continuing to grow, serve, and inspire others along the way.

I’m proud to celebrate her accomplishments and all of the young people who remind us just how bright the future of Columbia and South Carolina truly is. Keep dreaming, keep working, and keep making your mark! 🩵

❤️ A City With Heart

I am incredibly proud of the City of Columbia and our continued commitment to supporting causes that strengthen the health and well-being of our community.

This year, through the generosity, participation, and collective efforts of our City team, we proudly raised $10,000 in support of the American Heart Association South Carolina and its lifesaving mission.

This cause is especially near and dear to my heart, my family, and our City. Heart health touches so many of our families, friends, colleagues, and neighbors, and I am grateful to everyone who helped us turn our support into meaningful action.

Thank you to our City employees, partners, and supporters who contributed to this year’s fundraising efforts.

A few were so engaged, they even asked to extend their time through the fall. That says a lot. I truly regret that I wasn’t able to be there in person, but I’m always proud to see meaningful conversations like this taking place right here in our city!

I especially appreciate the leadership of Tyson K. Brown and his commitment to bringing people together, challenging us to think differently, and creating opportunities for important conversations about Columbia’s future.

One of the things I value most about our city is collaboration. Thank you to cityofcolumbia, Ayesha Driggers, Director of the Office of Business Opportunities, for partnering to bring different voices, perspectives, generations, and experiences to the table—and then listen, learn, and work together toward solutions.

Thank you to Tyson and everyone who helped make this conversation possible. Even though I couldn’t join you this time, please know that I’m proud to support the work and the dialogue that continues to move our city forward. 🩵🩵

Today, the City of Columbia pauses to honor the life, legacy, and service of Mr. Vaughn Granger, a valued business owner, community partner, and friend to our city.

On behalf of the City of Columbia, our Mayor, City Manager, Police Chief, and the entire Columbia Police Department family, we extend our condolences to the Granger family and all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Granger’s contributions to Columbia extended far beyond his work as a business owner. He believed in partnership, service, and doing his part to strengthen the community we all call home. His generosity and commitment were especially instrumental in supporting the Columbia Police Department’s Mounted Patrol, providing a home for our horses and helping us get this important community policing initiative back on the ground.

His willingness to step forward, lend his resources, and consistently work alongside the City exemplified what true community partnership looks like. We are grateful for Mr. Granger’s commitment, his generosity, and the relationship he built with our City.

Mr. Granger, Thank you for being a true partner to the City. We will miss you.

I’m energized reflecting on yesterday’s town hall regarding Booker Washington Heights community.

We covered it all: housing, development, public safety, crime reduction, and home improvements, along with valuable input from Public Works, Fire, and Parks & Recreation. These weren’t just discussions…They were solutions taking shape in real time.

I’m especially grateful to Councilmen Ed McDowell and Sam Johnson for their leadership, patience, and commitment as we worked through thoughtful questions from the community.

Let me be clear: we have your back… on every block, every corner. Together, we are building a stronger, safer, and more thriving Columbia for all.
