RaLeigh Evans will serve as the next assistant principal at Helena Intermediate School. Evans has 14 years of educational experience and most recently taught 3rd grade at Helena Intermediate.

Evans earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Auburn University, followed by a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education and an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Educational Leadership, both from Arkansas State University. She also holds certifications in Collaborative Special Education and Early Childhood Education.

Her diverse experience across physical education, adapted physical education, special education, and elementary education has shaped her commitment to creating inclusive, engaging learning environments where all students feel supported, challenged, and successful. She believes in building strong relationships with students, celebrating individual strengths, and providing meaningful opportunities for every child to grow academically and socially. Mrs. Evans is looking forward to serving the students, teachers, staff, and broader Helena community in this role, especially in the community she is now proud to call home.

Our nurses reaffirmed their commitment to Shelby County Schools students through a school nurse pledge and pinning event at their back-to-school professional development meetings. Thank you to our school nurses for reaffirming their dedication to our students and to their profession.

Shelby County Schools is training and hiring both full-time and substitute bus drivers! Being fully staffed with full-time and substitute drivers minimizes disruptions and ensures safe, consistent, and reliable transportation for our students and their families.

The transportation department is hosting three kick-off interest meetings on August 24th at 9:00 am, August 25 at 1:00 pm, and August 31 at 11:00 am. These meetings will take place at the bus shop - 116 Industrial Parkway, Columbiana, AL 35051. If you are interested in becoming a bus driver, please plan to attend one of these three sessions.

Dr. Lewis Brooks recently joined Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, and Dr. Sherlene McDonald, Superintendent of Tarrant City Schools, on an education panel sponsored by the Birmingham Business Alliance. Assistant State Superintendent Dr. Autumn Jeter moderated the event. The three superintendents highlighted successes from each district and encouraged business and community leaders to visit schools to see firsthand the amazing things happening every day.

Earlier this week, Shelby County Schools employees came together for IGNITE - a time to reconnect, refocus, and prepare for the year ahead.

We heard stories from across our school system, celebrated the people who make our schools special, and were reminded of the impact each of us has on the students we serve.

Take a look back at IGNITE and all of the energy, purpose, and excitement that helped set the stage for a great first day and an even greater school year ahead.
