Early History
Marathon Township was named for the famous Greek battlefield. Horace N.

Organized in 1839, the township was named by Silas D. McKeen who ran a saw mill and who was a member of the Michigan Legislature. The first town (now called township) meeting was held on the first day of April 1839, at the home of Abijah Willey. This was two years after Michigan joined the Union of the United States of America. ected first supervisor, S.D. McKeen was clerk, and Martin Volentine collector. Volentine said he never took any money in 1839 and 1840 except what turned out to be a bogus silver dollar. Early Finances
The next meeting S.D. McKeen was moderator and Richard Bronson, Abraham Hollenbeck, Andrew McArthur and Alonzo Davis were inspectors of the election. The first business was the appropriation of $250.00 for improvement of highways. The sum of $5.00 was voted for wolf bounty. Aaron Rood was the first man to enter a land claim. He took out his claim Novermber 25, 1836. There was a great deal of pine in the township at the time and it was for years more noted for lumbering than for farming. Source
This information was given to the Marathon Township Board by Ilah Nicholes wife of township sexton Bert Nichols, mother of Bob Nichols, former sexton, and was read at the 1989 annual meeting of the Marathon Township Board, which was the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Marathon Township. In October 1987, the community along with the Marathon Township Board and the State of Michigan celebrated their 150th birthdays.

🚧🛣️ Road Projects Update – Today & This Weekend 🛣️🚧

It's going to be a busy weekend in the Washburn Road and Columbiaville Road area as we continue preparing for this summer's asphalt resurfacing projects!

📍 Please refer to the attached map for the project locations and closures.

🚫 ROAD CLOSURES 🚫

🔴 Washburn Road
Closed today from Wilson Road north to Sister Lake Road for cross culvert replacement.

🔴 Columbiaville Road
Closed from Catlin Road to North Lake Road for cross culvert replacement.

🚜 What's Next?

Beginning tomorrow (Friday), crews will start crushing operations on:

🛣️ Washburn Road
From south of Dodge Road north to Sister Lake Road

Rather than removing the existing pavement, specialized equipment will crush the asphalt into gravel-sized material. This recycled material will then be graded, shaped, and compacted to create a strong new base for the upcoming asphalt resurfacing.

Once the culvert work is complete and scheduling allows, Columbiaville Road will undergo the same crushing process.

🚧 A Reminder About Type III Barricades
You'll see our large orange-and-white Type III barricades throughout the project.

✅ Barricades across the roadway = ROAD CLOSED
Our crews and heavy equipment are actively working. Please do not drive around the barricades.

✅ Barricades moved to the side or laid down = Proceed with caution
If the barricades have been moved off the roadway, you may carefully travel through the project area. Please drive slowly, watch for loose gravel, uneven surfaces, and construction equipment.

⚠️ If possible, we encourage motorists to avoid this area throughout the weekend to help keep traffic flowing safely and allow crews to make the most of the good weather.

At its July meeting, the Marathon Township Board approved a resolution to place a proposed 1-mill road millage on the November ballot. If approved by voters, this millage would provide a reliable, dedicated source of funding for road and drainage improvements throughout Marathon Township.
