Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force, which consists of regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees. CAP, in its Total Force role, operates a fleet

of 550 aircraft and performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 78 lives annually. Civil Air Patrol’s 56,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its members additionally play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program. Performing missions for America for the past 75 years, CAP received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. Visit www.capvolunteernow.com for more information.

Civil Air Patrol History....

On this day in 1942, CAP National Headquarters authorized the activation of Coastal Base 14 (CP-14) in Panama City, Florida, along the Gulf Sea Frontier. By this time, 78 ships had already been sunk in the Gulf, plus a major shipyard was being constructed in the Panama City area.

CP-14 initially consisted of volunteers from Cincinnati, Columbus, Versailles, Springfield, and various other Ohio cities, although personnel from other states eventually were assigned to the base. They established CP-14 at Atkinson Field, an abandoned, snake-infested air strip four miles northwest of Panama City that consisted of overgrown sod and sand runways and a cracked concrete apron that was filled with weeds.

Over the next few weeks, CAP members lived in tents along a nearby bayou and got Atkinson Field back into usable condition. They scavenged lumber and supplies from a local Civilian Conservation Corps camp to build barracks, a mess hall, an operations building, and a maintenance hangar. They even travelled to an island 100 yards off the shore of the base to clear enough vegetation to build the outline of a German submarine (complete with a conning tower made from 55-gallon drums) for bombing practice.

The next challenge for the CP-14 personnel was to train and equip themselves for coastal patrols. In addition to their bombing practice, crews received instruction in open water navigation and communications. By early August, the base was ready to begin operations.

Stay tuned for the next post about CP-14 which will be published on August 8th, the anniversary of the base's first patrol!

Civil Air Patrol History....

Did you know that this year marks the 85th anniversary of the founding of Civil Air Patrol? Our organization was founded on December 1st, 1941--just six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

One of CAP's most famous missions during World War II was to fly coastal patrol missions along the eastern seaboard in search of German submarines. 21 coastal patrol bases were established and operated from 1942 to 1943, with volunteers flying more than a quarter of a million hours over approximately 24 million miles!

Ohio Wing, although far removed from the threat of submarine attacks, wanted to lend a hand in this critical mission. In July of 1942, Ohio Congressman John M. Vorys began gathering volunteers from around the state to establish a new CAP coastal base staffed by Ohioans. Stay tuned to learn more about Ohio Wing's involvement in the coastal patrol mission!

July 2026 Buckeye Flyer shines a spotlight on the outstanding partnership between the Ohio Wing Civil Air Patrol and the 445th Airlift Wing.

Through hands-on experiences aboard the C-17 Globemaster III, military customs and courtesies, leadership development, and STEM exploration, cadets gained an unforgettable look into aviation, aerospace, and military careers during this year's Summer Encampment and National STEM Academy at Wright-Patterson AFB.

A sincere thank you to the 445th Airlift Wing for investing in the next generation of leaders and demonstrating the Air Force's commitment to mentorship, education, and service. We are proud of the cadets, senior members, and Airmen who made this experience a tremendous success!
