The Commons

The Commons The Commons The Commons is a community gathering place in the heart of downtown Columbus. Building on the strong foundation of the original structure, The Commons opened in April 2011 as a 21st century model for public gatherings and use by the community.

The new structure features an expanded indoor playground, complete with a Luckey climber, expanded Miller-Tangeman Lobby featuring Chaos, a Jean Tinguely sculpture created for the original Commons, the Nugent-Custer Performance Hall, The Patio and the Xenia Miller Conference Room (free for not-for-profit organizations to use). Among this year's awardees are Columbus' own Bob and Barbara Stevens! Since moving to Columbus, Indiana in 1985, Bob and Barbara have been leaders in business and supporters of the arts. They believe in giving back and leaving a legacy for their community, and Columbus has benefited from their support of numerous arts and community-based organizations. Their commitment to Columbus and the surrounding area can be seen in the range of projects, causes, and Indiana artists they have supported including the Columbus Area Arts Council, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, The Commons new building, Indiana University J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program, the The Historic Brown County Art Gallery expansion, and the new Visitor Center at the T. C. Steele State Historic Site. Every two years, the Indiana Arts Commission and the Office of the Governor (Governor Eric Holcomb) team up to celebrate and uplift individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the state through the arts. The IAC is excited to bring the show to you this year online with the streaming service Mandolin! Join us virtually to celebrate with award recipients and explore the Indiana towns they call home. Learn more about the awardees and find the link to the online ceremony at www.in.gov/arts/programs-and-services/partners/governors-arts-awards.
It was great to be back at The Commons photographing again. Here is a shot from the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, Indiana Women in Leadership event. Thank you, Cindy, for having me out to document the event. #thinklocalcolumbus
Let's start our celebration of all things DM by having a blast from the past! Did you know that Dance Marathon used to be held in the old The Commons? So cool!
Despite a pandemic, Sydney & Joel pulled off one of the most beautiful wedding days we’ve been a part of. Their day had it all from each little detail to candid moments with their pup, Hank, and friends & family. We’d tell you our favorite part of their day, but it’s just about impossible to decide between the getting ready excitement, first looks, pup kisses, the perfect golden hour, and the lively dance floor. I can remember going to The Commons as a kid. I was born there in 1975, moved to Ky in ‘78/‘79 but would go back up to visit family in and around Edinburg. Always loved going there to play on the playground and watch Chaos. So glad to see that it is still there.
Is the playground still closed?
