Ohio Sea Grant The national program is a network of over 300 institutions involving more than 3,000 scientists, engineers, educators, students and outreach experts.

Ohio Sea Grant is a statewide program that supports greater knowledge and stewardship of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes through research, education and outreach. It is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant College Program, which includes 32 state programs located in every coastal and Great Lakes state and Puerto Rico. This network works on a variety of topics

vital to human and environmental health-topics such as water quality coastal hazards and biotechnology. Support of Ohio Sea Grant is provided by NOAA Sea Grant, the State of Ohio, The Ohio State University, Ohio State University Extension, and participating universities, agencies, and businesses.

"If the trip taught me anything, it’s this: when we understand the water beneath us, we make better decisions about the land around us.”

Aboard an EPA research vessel for a week-long journey on Lake Superior, Ohio State University Extension Educator Kayla Wyse gained lasting knowledge that she will impart to farmers, youth, and communities across northwest Ohio for years to come.

The experience was made possible thanks to the 2026 Shipboard Science Immersion, led by the Center for Great Lakes Literacy (CGLL) – in partnership with the EPA Great Lakes National Program Office and the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network.

Over the past five years, Sea Grant seafood specialists from 14 programs have collaborated to support the $70 billion U.S. seafood industry by certifying 7,785 seafood professionals in FDA‑required training for seafood processors.

Working across state lines, these specialists have shared expertise to fill gaps in training capacity—supporting programs without certified trainers and even states without a Sea Grant program—ensuring the seafood industry nationwide has access to critical food safety education.

Last month, 11 formal and non-formal educators from around the state joined Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory to learn all about watersheds.

The Wandering through the Watershed Educator Workshop focused on the movement of water over the lands of Lake County to its end point in Lake Erie. Educators learned about forest ecology and physiology, stream water quality sampling and restoration projects, Lake Erie issues of concern like invasive species, and maritime history of Lake Erie.

Despite hot temperatures and wildfire smoke, everyone had a great time! Partners include The Holden Arboretum, OSU Lake County Extension, Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District (Ohio), Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc., Lake Metroparks, and Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse.

Lake Erie Awareness Day on Thursday, August 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. brings the magic of Lake Erie's history, culture, and natural resources to Put-in-Bay, Ohio!

Spend the day touring South Bass Island while learning about Ohio's greatest water resource and visiting education stations to learn about island history, native plants and animals, the dangers of plastic pollution, and boating safety. Fun giveaways and a great day in nature awaits! Go to all the stations and be entered to win a fabulous island themed prize.

This free event will run rain or shine.
