In 1929, Polk County opened the doors to its very first hospital — the original St. Luke’s on Carolina Drive in Tryon. What began as the Tryon Infirmary, led by Dr. Marion C. Palmer and Dr. Allen J. Jervey, quickly became a lifeline for the community. With just three doctors, four nurses, and a small support staff, this beautiful stone building marked the beginning of modern healthcare in our region.

For decades, patients climbed the hill to this Tudor‑style landmark for care, comfort, and recovery. Its walls witnessed the earliest chapters of St. Luke’s — a hospital built on vision, service, and the belief that even a small mountain town deserved exceptional medical care.

Today, the building still stands as a reminder of where it all began and how far our community hospital has come.

Discover why North Carolina is known as “First in Freedom.”

Join the Polk County Historical Association on Tuesday, May 19 at 2 p.m. for a fascinating look at the bold actions that set North Carolina apart during the years leading up to the American Revolution.

Robert Williamson of the House of Flags Museum will share how early documents like the Mecklenburg Declaration of 1775 and the Halifax Resolves of 1776 helped pave the way for American independence — milestones still honored on our state flag today.

The program will be held inside the Polk County History Museum, co‑located with the House of Flags at 33 Gibson Street in Columbus. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.

When the Whole Town Turned Out
Around 1915, these students walked across Mills Street in Columbus on their way to commencement, passing neighbors, wagons, and the familiar storefronts of a growing county seat. Early life in Polk County looked much like this — dirt roads underfoot, horse‑drawn wagons lining the street, handmade dresses carefully pressed for the occasion, and a community that always showed up for its young people. Graduation wasn’t just a school milestone; it was a shared moment of pride for the entire town, a reminder of how education and togetherness shaped the county’s future.

This photo and many many others are archived in a huge display, similar to a book, with pages and pages of photos. Come and see for your self!!

Here, Colonel Franklin Coxe sits at the reins of his private coach outside the Battery Park Hotel. During this period, families like the Coxes were instrumental in connecting Asheville, the mountain counties, and the Polk County region through rail lines, business ventures, and early tourism. This photograph highlights how local history is intertwined across county lines, showing the broader forces that helped shape life in Western North Carolina.

The trestle that once stood at the North Carolina–South Carolina line over Vaughn's Creek in Tryon met its end during one of the region’s historic floods, a time when heavy rains turned the foothills into torrents and washed out sections of the old rail line. Early rail travel through the Saluda Grade depended on these wooden trestles, and when the floodwaters rose, they tore through the structure with enough force to halt trains, isolate towns, and disrupt the flow of goods that local farms and mills relied on. Whether it was the powerful 1901 storm or the catastrophic flood of 1916, the result was the same: the trestle was swept away, leaving behind a broken line and a community waiting for the rails to be rebuilt. It became one of those local stories that lived on long after the tracks were repaired — a reminder of how quickly nature could reshape life in the mountains and foothills.
