#ThisDayInHistory - On 22 July 2003, Operation Tapeworm occurs. Soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) fire a TOW missile at a building suspected of harboring Saddam Hussein’s sons Qusay and Uday in Mosul, Iraq. The brothers were killed as they resisted efforts by coalition forces to apprehend them. The deaths of Uday and Qusay Hussein were significant to the coalition forces' mission to restore security and deny the former regime and its loyalists any hope of returning to power, and represented a major victory for the coalition.

Whether in the rain, wind or sunshine medics at the Indiana National Guard Headquarters are working every day to screen every individual for the novel COVID-19 to mitigate the spread of the ongoing pandemic.

Working in teams, soldiers with the Indiana Medical Detachment screen individuals entering the Indiana National Guard Headquarters by taking temperatures, asking a series of health-related questions and monitoring the data they collect.

Their mission is vital to preventing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring the safety of fellow soldiers and other personnel working to support the National Guard’s pandemic response mission.

“I’m thankful that I can be here, be healthy and do my part. Someone has to do it and it might as well be me,” said Sgt. Samuel R. Boone, medic with the Indiana Medical Detachment. “Going to annual training is one thing… but, actually having a mission is rewarding.”

Before moving to the gate entrance, medics were helping screen individuals entering the warehouse on-site where medical supplies were being shipped to hospitals around the state.

“It was just amazing to see all the supplies that were going out to the hospitals and to know what it meant to those nurses,” said Staff Sgt. Greta L. Ervin, a medic with the Indiana Medical Detachment. “To see that and be a part of that is rewarding.”

While, helping Hoosiers around the state is fulfilling, it doesn’t come without hardships. Many soldiers were mobilized suddenly with little notice and are currently staying away from their families and loved ones while assisting the National Guards COVID-19 response.

“It’s hard because I don’t get to spend as much time with my family,” Spc. Ralph T. Myars, medic with the Indiana Medical Detachment. “But, I think this mission is worthwhile and the setup that we have is effective and efficient.”
