On September 7th, 1927, The Columbus Dispatch published a photo of Green Lawn Abbey under construction. While the construction was technically announced in June of 1926 after the land was purchased from the Distelhorst family, that likely included demolition at first, as well as landscaping. This would do well to explain why the year 1927 is on the frieze above the 2nd floor entrance. This article lists Joseph Gaudio as the Abbey's architect, but it's more likely that he was an independent contractor hired by the Columbus Mausoleum Company. The construction was completed in December of 1928, and the deed was transferred to the Columbus Cemetery Association, which still owns the building.

Before Labyrinth became a cult classic, George Lucas joined Jim Henson as executive producer and worked with Henson on the film’s story and editing. Lucas attended script meetings, offered notes and later helped shape the final edit. Henson credited Lucas with helping clarify the storylines and strengthen the structure of the film.

It was a pretty magical collaboration: Jim Henson + George Lucas + David Bowie + Brian Froud. ✨

The evening will feature a special screening of the beloved 1986 fantasy classic Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, along with plenty of 1980s-inspired fun throughout the night.

THE MAGIC OF LABYRINTH STARTED WITH JIM HENSON ✨

Before David Bowie became the Goblin King and before Sarah entered the maze, Jim Henson was imagining a world unlike anything audiences had seen before.
Henson directed Labyrinth and worked closely with artist Brian Froud, whose fantastical designs helped shape its goblins, creatures and otherworldly landscapes. Henson’s Creature Shop then brought those characters to life through innovative puppetry and animatronics.

Henson even pushed the technology further in Labyrinth, using an early version of what would become the Henson Performance Control System to give animatronic characters remarkably expressive, complex movements.

The result? A strange, beautiful, wonderfully imaginative world where nothing is quite what it seems.

And now, you can experience that world under the stars at The Abbey. 🌙
