Yesterday, Airmen and the Columbus community gathered to solemnly honor and remember Master Sgt. Tyler “Pepe” Simmons with a dedicated street naming ceremony outside his alma mater. Tyler tragically lost his life alongside 5 fellow crew members in a KC-135 Stratotanker crash over Iraq in March 2026. While no tribute can ever fully bridge the loss, naming this street after him ensures that his name and sacrifice remain woven into the community that raised him.
To those who served alongside him in the 121st Air Refueling Wing, Tyler was so much more than a dedicated Airman—he was a light in every room. Famous for never having a bad day, he brought an infectious smile, natural leadership, and unwavering warmth to everything he touched, from his early days in security forces to fulfilling his passion in the sky as a boom operator. Whether he was roller-skating, cheering on TCU, or sharing a laugh over his favorite snacks, Tyler lived life fully and lifted everyone around him. Above all, he was a devoted son to his parents, Cheryl and Charles, and a deeply loyal friend and teammate.
Tyler’s time with us was far too short, but his legacy is forever carved into our base, our city, and our hearts. As generations pass down this street, they will be reminded of a hero who gave everything for his country and brought immeasurable joy to those around him. Rest easy, Pepe. You will never be forgotten.
