76% of patients agree that insurance company red tape makes it harder for physicians to provide the best care for their patients. A physician’s best day is spent caring for their patients, not navigating prior authorization approvals.

Administrative burden takes time away from patient care.

This week, OSMA provided testimony in support of Substitute Senate Bill 162, legislation designed to make the insurance payment audit and takeback process more fair and predictable for physicians and medical practices.

The bill would:

• Reduce Ohio's insurer takeback timeframe from 24 months to 12 months
• Extend provider appeal timelines from 30 days to 60 days
• Require electronic notification of takebacks when electronic systems exist

OSMA Vice President of Advocacy Monica Hueckel and Dr. Marc Antonchak shared testimony highlighting the real-world impact that delayed payment recoupments can have on physician practices and the patients they serve.

MCMS supports advocacy efforts that reduce unnecessary administrative burden and allow physicians to focus on what matters most: caring for patients.

A new report from the Physicians' Advocacy Institute confirms what many physicians are already experiencing. 82% of U.S. physicians are now employed by hospitals or corporate entities, a trend that has grown steadily over the past decade.

When hospitals and insurance companies set the terms of how medicine is practiced, physicians have less say in the decisions that matter most. Corporate priorities and insurance requirements are increasingly shaping treatment decisions that once belonged to the doctor and the patient.

Patients feel it, too. Instead of focusing on care, physicians are competing to hit metrics set by a hospital or corporate employer. That pressure has real consequences for the patient experience.

This is why OSMA exists. Regardless of where a physician practices, every doctor deserves the ability to put their patient first. Physician advocacy is patient advocacy.

One message came up again and again during last week’s webinar with Thrive For Change: meet people where they’re at.

Harm reduction goes beyond overdose response. It focuses on reducing risk, breaking down stigma, and creating pathways that keep people connected to care and support.

As today’s landscape continues to evolve, conversations like these matter because the language we use, the way we approach care, and practical strategies can shape outcomes.
