The chaos and lawlessness seen that led to the cancelation of the St. Catharine FunFest last night cannot be tolerated. Residents who attend and organizers who plan summer events should not have to worry about their safety or the possibility of this type of inexcusable behavior—and criminal conduct—disrupting events, impacting businesses, and making neighborhoods less safe. Police, prosecutors, and judges must send a message that this behavior is unacceptable.

Today my office announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its new proposed rule by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that would drive up patient costs, raise premiums, and deny coverage to 2 million Americans who obtain their health insurance through “exchanges” created under the Affordable Care Act.

This is the third lawsuit we’ve led against the Trump administration for its attempts to undermine access to quality, affordable healthcare for working people and the 10th lawsuit my office has filed against President Trump during his second term.

Enacted in 2010, the ACA allows millions of Americans to gain access to affordable, comprehensive healthcare through insurance “exchanges” and prohibits denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Under the first Trump administration, my office led efforts to push back on the Trump administration’s attempts to undermine the ACA, and the District Court for Maryland sided with Columbus and other plaintiffs—throwing out new Trump rules.

In 2025, Columbus once again sued after the second Trump administration returned to the same playbook with new rules to drive up the cost of coverage and kick people off the insurance rolls, and the court again rejected that effort. The City’s latest lawsuit claims that many of the provisions in the Trump-Vance administration’s new rules mimic rules already thrown out by the courts, which remain in conflict with federal law.

Since Trump took office in January 2025, my office has made Columbus a leading voice pushing back against the chaos, corruption, and illegal actions of the Trump administration, filing 10 lawsuits and numerous amicus briefs to challenge the president’s radical actions. My office led efforts to save SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans during the government shutdown and fought to protect millions of dollars in federal funding to help the homeless, prevent infectious disease, and invest in parks and public spaces, job training, and tools to help law enforcement solve violent crimes.

Every American deserves quality, affordable healthcare. Rolling back that access is un-American, and we must all rally behind protecting healthcare access and controlling costs instead of erecting barriers that undermine quality, increase premiums and make it harder to get insurance. My default position is to work with state and federal partners to benefit residents and families, but the Trump-Vance administration seems more interested in punishing adversaries than helping working people get ahead. We’ve sued the president 10 times now and will continue to challenge the president’s lawlessness when his administration threatens the health, safety, or well-being of Columbus, our residents, or law enforcement.

We want businesses to thrive and be community hubs in every Columbus neighborhood, but owners need to follow the law and operate safely. That’s not what’s been happening at M&J Carryout on Sullivant Avenue.

My office’s Property Action Team has filed a lawsuit against the owners for various code violations, underage alcohol sales, violent crime, and illegal gambling. This market was one of several properties referenced by residents as being a problem at our recent Block by Block community safety forum on the city’s west side.

Since May 2024, Columbus Police and Fire departments have received more than 35 calls regarding the market, including for an assault, shots fired, substance abuses, and alcohol-related incidents. The market has also been connected to reports of a man trying to fight people outside the front of the store, affiliated with reports of the theft of EBT cards, and reports of s*x workers loitering around the premises. On multiple occasions, CPD responded to the market on reports of violent crime, including individuals threatening people with guns, a fight, and a stabbing.

In addition to various quality of life crimes, the market has failed multiple underage alcohol sales compliance checks and has been cited for numerous safety and fire code violations, including selling expired baby food.

In May 2026, CPD detectives also uncovered illegal gambling at the market as well as liquor sales outside the parameters of their permit, and citations were issued.

Residents are rightly fed up, and now owners must face the court. We want them to clean up their act or face additional accountability.

The case is set for hearing on Monday, June 15, at 9:30 a.m.

For many, Pride is a celebration of the progress that’s been made for the LGBTQ+ community, from nondiscrimination protections to marriage equality and so much more—but it’s also a reminder that there’s more work to do.

Extremist bills targeting the LGBTQ+ community have been introduced in nearly every state, and hate and bias crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals are on the rise nationwide.

Hate has no home in Columbus. If any bias crime comes across my desk, I’ve instructed my team to talk to victims and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent possible.

We’ve got your back. Happy Pride Month, Columbus. 🏳️‍🌈

My office’s Property Action Team has secured a court order to board up a west side condominium for felony drug activity and overdoses. The property is currently under an agreed upon order with the court filed in 2021 following an extensive history of criminal activity, narcotics complaints, drug overdoses, domestic violence and shootings.

My office initially filed a complaint in 2021 alleging criminal activity and drug dealing out of 1117 Hardesty Place East, a condominium in the Hardesty Village complex on the west side. For years, the property plagued the neighborhood with multiple shootings, drug overdoses, and violent crime. The Environmental Court granted the City’s initial motion to board up the property in 2021 as well as a subsequent agreement later that same year between the Court, City and property owner for the owner to clean up the property and keep it crime and drug free.

Recently, however, the Property Action Team alleges several violations of the 2021 Court order. Police have observed multiple guests at the property after receiving community complaints about foot traffic and drug activity. There have also been reports of at least three drug overdoses at the property in recent years.

The Court sided with the City and granted its emergency motion to find the property owner in contempt of court and ordered CPD to board up the property.

Property owners that let drugs and criminal activity fester on their watch will not be tolerated in the city of Columbus. The moment we have sufficient evidence of this type of negligence, we will take action, and if appropriate, ask the Court to shut the property down so we can get it cleaned up. Neighbors are safer now with this magnet for drugs and crime no longer terrorizing the west side.

Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and we owe them a debt that can never fully be repaid. Happy Memorial Day, Columbus. 🇺🇸

S*x and human trafficking can take many different forms, as we’ve seen in recent cases involving local massage parlors.

If you have reason to believe that these crimes are taking place, the most important thing you can do is to report it. Don’t wait. Your tip could save a life.

For emergency situations, always call 911. For non-emergency situations, call (614) 645-4545. The National Human Trafficking Hotline is also available 24/7 at 1-883-373-7888.

I was glad to spend time with Jennifer and the team at Jordan’s Crossing yesterday. Their resource center on Columbus’ west side continues to make a meaningful difference for residents experiencing addiction, homelessness, and other hardships.

Jordan’s Crossing was one of the very first community partners in our police community immersion program, strengthening relationships between Columbus police recruits and the neighborhoods they serve.

Jennifer and her team’s compassion and leadership are helping shape better futures for so many of our friends and neighbors on the west side and throughout the city.

Today’s ribbon cutting at Community for New Direction’s new facility marked an important investment in healing, prevention, and opportunity for Columbus families. This new space will strengthen the organization’s ability to provide mental health and substance use treatment and intervention services.

I was proud to join community leaders and partners in celebrating this milestone and the important work does every day to support youth and families.

and I recently shut down two massage parlors accused of promoting prostitution and possible s*x and human trafficking crimes.

We’ll continue working together to hold corrupt and criminal business owners accountable, and to crack down on any business that threatens public safety.
