We are committed to lifting 1,000 families out of poverty in 2,000 days and making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring. Achieving these ambitious goals is only possible through the support of individuals and organizations in our community.

Recently, team members from Centra Credit Union took part in a Discover United Way of Bartholomew County Day. They had the opportunity to learn about some of the partnerships we rely on to ensure everyone has what they need to reach their full potential.

A big thank you to Advocates for Children, Family Service, Inc. Su Casa, Thrive Alliance, and Sans Soucii for showcasing the impactful work you do to enhance social services in Bartholomew County.

And thank you, Centra, for your commitment to learning more about our community!

At United Way of Bartholomew County, we are dedicated to creating a community where every child thrives both inside and outside the classroom, every family has their basic needs met, and every individual leads a stable and successful life.

We understand that when a child is hungry, feels unsafe at home, or lacks essential resources, it’s hard for them to focus on school and they may fall behind their peers, impacting their entire future.

Consistently not having their basic needs met can also change how they think, making it difficult for them to see beyond their immediate needs. This challenge is beautifully captured in Joshua T. Dickerson's poem, “Cause I ain’t got a pencil.”

Our commitment at United Way of Bartholomew County is to ensure every child has what they need—an alarm clock, clean clothes, utilities, and that pencil—so that our amazing educators can focus on what they do best: setting our children up for success.

In Bartholomew County, 1 in 5 children lives in poverty. For their parents, this means making tough decisions every day: Should they cut back on groceries to afford school supplies? Where can they find quality childcare so they can work?

To better understand these challenges, educators at BCSC recently participated in our Poverty Simulation. Experiencing life as a family living in poverty, they described the simulation as stressful, overwhelming, and deeply frustrating—echoing the real struggles faced by families in our community.

We’re on a mission to lift 1,000 families out of poverty in 2,000 days. It’s an ambitious goal, but one that requires all of us in Bartholomew County to work together. By understanding the issue and systematically removing barriers, we can make this vision a reality.

A huge thank you to the BCSC administrators and educators who approached this experience with an open mind, and to all the volunteers who made the simulation so authentic and impactful. We also appreciate Foundation For Youth for providing the space to host this important event.

Around 12% of our community lives in poverty, and approximately 34% of Bartholomew County residents work but still struggle to meet their basic needs. Every day, they face difficult choices: should they buy groceries or pay the utility bill? Do they have enough gas to get to work, or do they need to take out a high-interest payday loan?

Last week, Human Services, Inc. employees participated in our Poverty Simulation, where they confronted the same challenges our neighbors endure daily. This experience is part of our mission to lift 1,000 families out of poverty in 2,000 days, educating participants about the realities faced by many families who benefit from United Way and our partners.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Human Services employees who approached this simulation with openness and empathy. Thank you for the work you do daily to reach our BOLD GOAL of lifting families out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.

“United to mobilize people and strengthen our community”

United Way of Bartholomew County exists to help our community work better together.

We are a network of givers, advocates, volunteers, nonprofits and businesses who work together to create opportunity for all people in Bartholomew County. Our work is focused in three main areas of impact - financial stability, education and access to health. We fund strong nonprofits who are the backbone of our community, mobilize thousands of donors and volunteers each year, and create new, innovative programs that move our community forward.

It takes all of us working together to creating big, lasting change. Can we count you in? Learn more about our work on our website: https://bit.ly/2DSOOCH
